W108 wheel shafts out of whack?
Hi all,
I’m currently rebuilding a W108 rear axle and I had two pairs of wheel shafts measured by a machine shop: one pair is out of a 4.5 and the other ^pair out of a 250. The workshop manual gives the following specifications: Permissible vertical runout on bearing seat: 0.03 mm Permissible vertical runout on center alignment with rear axle shaft installed: 0.12 mm Permissible lateral runout on flange: 0.12 mm Measurements on the 4.5 pair, in the same order, are: right shaft: 0.18 mm; 0.96 mm; 0.38 mm; left shaft: 0.35 mm; 1.02 mm; 0.35 mm; Measurements on the 250 pair, in the same order, are: right shaft: 0.23 mm; 1.4 mm; 0.41 mm; left shaft: 0.18 mm; 1.4 mm; 0.58 mm. Both pairs are clearly out of tolerance, but not that the runout on center alignment was made with the shaft held by the center points on both extremities, not in place. May be once in place the bearing runout will partially compensate the center alignment run out. But how can one measure anything with a shaft in place in the axle tubes? I’m quite surprised regarding the 250 pair as these axles are under much less stress than the 4.5 one, and this leads me to believe I will have difficulties to find good second hand ones. I am tempted to use the 4.5 pair as is (because the right shaft has that clip to insure the sliding sleeve is well in place and the 250 one doesn’t have it). I would like to know what is the forum members’ experience on the matter and what are the risks? Thanks! |
