'72 250 - Any Info ??

Since my kid presented me with a self-portrait at 88mph in the 450, I've been looking for something a bit less 'tempting' for him to drive.

Saw a '72 250 on the curb near work for $1200.00. Seller says that the odometer died at 98,500 before he bought it, so I don't know the mileage. Hesays that it runs nicely, but that the A/C needs a little work, and it has a drain in the battery that will take it down in a day or so.

As near as I can figure, this is the 114.011 chassis, with a 130.923 motor. I've been keeping a '75 450SL going (mostly), so I can do quite a bit of my own mechanical work.

It doesn't seem to have more than a couple spots of surface rust, a fender that needs repinting, and some cracked MBtex on the front passenger seat.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Run / Walk away, Jump on it, keep going, or what? Anything to look for?

Thanks,
Scott

Got a chance to get a closer look. Blue smoke out the tailpipe...I'm saying no. It was still smoking after running 5 minutes or so. To me, that says rings. Valve stem seals would stop smoking after a miunte or so.

I'll just keep looking

Second that, sounds like valve guides. If the head comes off to fix this, you may well find extensive corrosion in the head around the water jackets. This is common if the coolant has not been changed regularly. I did a head rebuild on a 250C and took $800 worth of welding and straightening to fix it in addition to $500 for the guides, seals and grind.
