chain tensioner
I replaced the timing chain on the 280 sel.
How do you know that the chain tensioner needs to be replaced? Will the chain make a noise or does the engine just preform poorly? If it needs to be replaced. Is everything replaced or just the internal parts?

If there is any noise, it will be from the chain. You have just changed it, so that's good. If the old chain was flopping around, making noise, chances are the rails will be worn. As long as the spring in the tensioner is still nice and stiff, and as long as the unit isn't all gummed up as mine was - which required changing just last week - it should be fine.
