Lots of questions: turboing - transmission related
Hey all.
I've been wondering lately. Since I have the exhaust manifold that is designed for US barrel cats, I was thinking it would make the possibility of a turbo setup on my W116 280S as someone jokingly mentioned in an exhaust thread on W116.org. Has anyone ever done it before? I'm slightly familiar with turboing on a FI car but have no idea about carbed cars. Is this possible? How would it be done? And since my car is US Spec, it's all dependent on what my compression ratio is. According to this site, M110 engined Benzes didn't receive a lower compression ratio until January of 1976. My car being a model year 1975, that means it was most likely produced in later year 1974. If this is true, then my compression ratio would be 9.0:1 which wouldn't be suitable for a turbo setup (at least that's waht I'm told since most FI cars have lower CRs). Although a few people here said my car has a CR of 8.0:1 but it again conflicts with what's on W116.org and on Wikipedia. That seems more suitable for a turbo setup. That said...if I do choose to turbo the M110, is there any possibility for me being able to swap out an overdrive transmission or a different rear end? I can't stand driving 70MPH and revving at 3550-3600 RPM. The other thing that's holding me back is my car is very young in use. Im at 85.5K miles. So I'm just debating whether I should just use what I have until it ****s itself. My dream though for this car once the engine and trans take a **** is to either swap an M103 3.0 or a 3.2 M104....maybe even an M119 5.0 ...wishful thinking though. teehee What say you guys?
