280SEL 4.5 grease points
I'd like to grease my 4.5 myself so I know it's been gone right. Any tips would be helpful. How many grease points are there? I'm not sure that I've found them all. Should the weight be on or off the car when greasing? Can someone refer me to a diagram of the grease points. There is none in the manual I own.

There are 14 in the front suspension and two on the differential mount.
The fourteen in the front go as follows: three on each kingpin (one at the upper trunion one on the spindle body and one on the lower trunion), two on each lower control arm inner pivot and two on each upper control arm inner pivot.

Steve,
The two on the differential mount, are they the same as the two for the swing arm? Those are the only two I remember so if there are more, I need to get at them .

Often over-looked is the slide joint on the driveshaft.
I believe there is also an oiler for the dist. shaft [ on the side]and a wick under the rotor. |

Where is the grease point on the slide joint on the driveshaft? Can't seem to find that one. Can't find the oiler on side od distributor either. I've got a 72 280SEL 4.5.

I've posted a page with photos from my MB Maintenance Manual that will show you the front & rear suspension grease points. Use the following link:

Tom,
Thanks for the great pics. I think I got them all and they all took grease. BTW where can I get a copy of your shop manual? Is it the CD they call Early Volume 3 in the parts dept here? Bill |

Bill,
Thanks for your kind appreciation of my post. The manual those pictures came out of is titled: "Maintenance Manual - Passenger Cars - USA Version" The publishing date is September 1974, and the manual covers models 220D thru 600. It is about 5/8" thick. This manual covers only what MB considers "maintenance" jobs and is a different manual than the larger 1968 - 1973 shop manual. I don't know if this manual is hard to come by or not, but I would be happy to post any information or photos contained in it for anyone who would find it useful, just let me know! Tom Drew
