1981 W123 200 Stromberg 175 Cd servicing

Guys,

I've just bought his car with 122 900 kms on the clock and FMBSH upto 100 000kms. The last two services were carried out at some fool's garage... with 115 000kms being the last one in May 2007 - that consisted of oil and plugs only.
The car is in genuine excellent condition.

Yesterday I changed plugs, filters and oil. New aircleaner should be delivered today.

The motor pulls well and starts first time anytime - however, it runs very rough with the elbow snorkel connected between the air cleaner housing and the carb, ie. between 400 and 700rpms. With that snorkel disconnected, ie open carb, the motor idles faster and runs like it is fuel injected.
However, again, when maneuvering between D and R it wants to stall and idles at something like 400rpms.
I've sprayed some carb cleaner into the carb with no effect.

How does one check the ATF level? I removed the yellow plug and found the dipstick dry. Where should the oil level be on the dipstick?

What else could cause these symptoms?

I suspect it is running rich as the exhaust burned pitch black after a 50km highway run.
Where is the air screw?
I've found the idle screw - adjustment has no effect when the aircleaner is connected. But without the motor responds readily.

Any help is appreciated.

I can't do much of a search with GPRS here in Africa

Thanx!

Look up the University Motors website for some nice videos of Stromberg setups. The cap unscrews & fill the bowl up to the top of the bowl leaving about a half inch free. the screw that goes into the fuel bowl underneath does the idle & power mixture. University motors explains this adjustment. & if you know of another orphan 175 CD let me know.

Thanx guys,

I eventually took it to a specialist who sorted it out in a jiffy - it ran so sweet afterwards.
Alass, I sold soon after... err, I'ma it spoilt with V8 and 6cyl power, and here at high altitude it was a bit slow - but it easily reached 150km/h on flats!
