Bumper Re-chroming
I posted the other day about repairing rust on floorboards and recieved some excellent responses. Thanks.
Now this: The 280 SL that I am looking at has bumpers that must have been re-chromed one that have developed quarter sized rust bubbles in a couple of places. They don't appear to go all the way through but unfortunately all four bumpers have at least on trouble spot on them. Q1: Can bumpers be re-chromed to remove the rust? Q2: How far gone can they be before it is a waste of time to re-chrome? Q3: What would new or good used bumpers generally cost? I'm tracking set on Ebay (rears only) to see how that goes. Thanks. J. They were either re-chromed without the proper prep or it could be the original chrome that somehow had a contaminate under material. To re-chrome the old finish must be sandblasted off and surface preped, de-greased etc. A good chrome shop can give you details and pricing.
