Hello Mercedes experts. I am in need of some help with a 1971 300 sel 6.3. The car starts and runs beautifully 99% of the time. I have been encountering an issue with it shutting down while driving. It is very intermittent. Most of the time it is just a hiccup, it will cut out for about 10 seconds and then pick up again, but it has cut out for as long as 30 min a couple of times. It does not lose power when this happens ( radio, lights, etc still work). I initally thought it was the coil. One of the instances it cut out for 30 min. I installed a new coil and it started right up and ran fine for a week before acting up. I feel it is ignition related. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Try finding the connection leading to the distributor. Disconnect it and clean it thoroughly. Reconnect and You just might find out the engine could run a bit better.
I would recommend you take apart most electrical connections and clean them with electrical contact cleaner. Stay away from the injector contacts. Damage happens to the pins when disconnected too often if it is a D jet. |

I had a similar problem with my 6.3. It would start running on four cylinders and then it would shut off. This was one of the two sets of points that was badly insulated. The clip holding the black wire on the moving part of the points was not properly in place and was too close to the metal. While heating the metal would expand and enter into contact, shorting the citcuit. Have you tried the M-100 board? www.M-100.cc You have true experts of that model there who will help you out.

Thanks for your help. Turns out it has been converted to a Mallory pointless system and the module went bad.
