Ok, I Have a 69 240 and the engine is in the trunk....

Sorry... It's a 250!!

I bought this car off of craigs list for 100$ cost me 85$ to get it delivered.
This are the issues:

Engine was pulled, and torn apart
7 years ago, it sat in the person's garage for 7 YEARS! in parts.
they were moving and had to sell the car. All of the parts are diligently sorted in envelopes, labeled and sorted. The new gaskets are there too, or at least many of them. They were looking to rebuild the engine but, I didn't ask...
I wanted to swap the engine, and convert it to veggie oil. I was told that it was too much trouble.
I also know that in parts I would make my money back plus++.
The interior is in great shape, the body is in fair shape, and the engine and transmission are in the trunk, and back seat.
I have the grill and front and rear emblems and hubcaps inside my house because of the thieves in the neighborhood (grrr).
I figured to sell the engine in parts to cover most of the cost for a "new" diesel engine.
I have a welding shop, I build bicycles. I have welding equipment and etc to put in new mounts.
I like the bomb proof-ness of this car, I am not to concerned with a little rust.
I am in Pittsburgh PA. I have about 600$ to put into this now, maybe more latter(?) I have some experience with cars, but generally don't mess with them.
I have had an Audi Fox, and two VW micro buses and worked on them.
What are my options?
I promised I would try to get it working, the woman that sold it to me was very nice. But if it comes down to it I will part it out...
Any options, opinions?

Whats the best (profitable) way to part this?

Oh, I also got two big boxes of costume jewelry that came with the car, and got about 120-150 worth of gold, silver and pearls!!!

Why not rebuild the engine and car? The 250/8 is a fine car. The engine is very sturdy. I'm rebuilding my 65 220S.

Second the motion by Warren...the 250 is nearly bullet-proof and much more powerful than the diesel. That said, if you part out the beastie let us know; I'd probably be interested in the twin Zenith carbs, if they are all in one piece. Others would be interested in various bits as well.

Yeah, I third that, put the engine back together and get it running and THEN see if you want a diesel. You could always sell it and buy a diesel later, converting is probably too much trouble. One thing you ought to do soon though is get that engine/tranny outta the trunk! I don't think that's too good for the suspension.

Maybe your camera is busted; those pictures are way out of focus.

oops

The lens was dirty...
I am going through everything, cleaning everything. Taking a look at what is here....

The bottom of the engine and the transmission are out of the car.

Here is the transmission and some of the engine.
(my camera is acting funny, sorry about the out of focus pics.)

sounds like a decent car.

check the crank for warpage, check your rods for bends and twists
check the valve guides
get some new piston rings and main/rod bearings

check your cylinder bores for even wear

check your cam for any wear

let us know what you find!

From the standpoint of an honest MB technician, Vegetable oil is a threat to your diesel engine's mechanical integrity.

Someone may have to back me up on this, but I'm like 95% positive that those cars were front engined cars...

Der's yer problem right der!

Remove the engine from the rear of the car, and installation in the front of the car is the reverse of removing.

HAHA...

After 3 days of cleaning, this is what I have got thus far:
I am using a steam cleaner, with laundry detergent.
Also, Brillo pads, tooth brush and wooden popsicle sicks.

I alternate that with a thourough brush coat of used veggie oil.
The veggie oil works a good job on cutting the caked on gunk.
And protects the oil less parts, and it is free.

There are some factory markings, or possibly from a previous rebuild?
Light green on the transmission, in other places a couple of white globs of paint.
There is also a large USA stenciled on the side of the block.

There looks to be a noch cut out of the transmission pan.
It looks like the engine blew a ring.

There is some heat discoloration on the piston shaft.

Where can I get detailed blow ups of this engine?
There was a cd rom in the car, "Mercedes Benz repair cd rom", on the sleeve, cd shows on my computer as a blank.

Measure the deck height on the cylinder head. From what I can see of the picture it has already been surfaced at or slightly below the minimum.

ok

Where do I find a diagram or schematics of the engine. I have the books but, I want/need digital images.

I have a micromiter, but I am getting a digital. How could I check the surface for warp without a certified surface?

I need the measurements for the tolerances.

A sheet of glass is a rough way to check the surface for warping. Turn the head upside down, apply a thin layer of oil to the sealing surfaces and lie the glass flat on the head. The oil will spread out wherever it makes contact between the glass and the head. This is a rough way only but it will give you an idea. Slide the glass sideways to remove it from the head.

Ok good call. I build bikes and I use lazers to sight everything but the glass sounds solid.

Where can I get a diagram of the engine?

The online EPC will give you an exploded diagram for the car. You need the free US subscription. (you'll have to search for the URL).

If you want to rebuild something

I think it is great if you have the time, money and energy to rebuild something of little value. But to rebuild it to give you low cost transportation I think it is a mistake. It is not impossible to make some money from parting it out either, just difficult. If you want something to work on and be a good driver get a late 80's W124 in either gas or diesel. They are a great car, fun to drive and there are a lot of them for sale in the $1000 to $2000.00 arena.
