all those rubber parts
One of the reasons that restoring a sophisticated newer "old" car like Mercedes' 108s is so expensive is the plethora of rubber parts that deteriorate over time almost regardless of mileage or reasonable care. These cars may have been designed to last 20 years, but not 40 years! Here is a partial list of the rubber parts that are likely to need replacing:
Subframe mounts. Engine mounts. Engine vibration damper mounting discs. Accessory drive belts. Coolant hoses. Oil cooler hoses. Sway bar bushes. Under hood sound/heat blanket. AC lines and seals. Steering box seals and O-rings. Transmission mount. Driveshaft flex disc. Driveshaft support bearing carrier. Brake lines. Fuel lines. Vacuum lines, engine and door locks. Door lock vacuum diaphrams.Door and trunk seals. Sunroof seals. Window channels. (109) Air suspension valve O-rings. Well, that's all I could think of on the spur of the moment.

The rubber bushes in the front and rear suspension components. There are a lot of little parts in there that consume hours and hours of labor to replace correctly.
I priced out all the rubber suspension parts for my SWB 600 2 years back. Along with shocks and brake pads, it came to about 9,000$. But that's one extreme car with an equally extreme price tag. -CTH |

And dont forget those pieces of plastic in your wallet. After replacing all the rubber bits on your car they could probably stand a little TLC also!
