W114 Mercedes Benz 280CE clutch
I just took delivery of my 73 280CE 4 speed. Car is very rusty but runs great. It does however need a new clutch.
Does anyone know if a clutch kit is available?

I am sure it is. It may be the same as for a 240 but it also might be a bigger diameter.

Actually I got the part numbers from EPC and looked up the parts from my local wholesaler. It turns out that the parts are the same as the Euro 350SL and the 190E with a 4 speed!.
I got the clutch, pressure plate and release bearing for about $200 + tax. All i need now is the alignment tool. Thanks!

You don't need an aligning tool, just poke a socket set extention in the clutch and line it up roughly. I sometime stick as bit of superglue on the clutch face to hold it to the flywheel. When you start the engine the plate comes free. Simple and cheaper than buying a tool you may use once in 10 years.

Just thought I'd show you this Al, A 44,000 mile 280 CE . It has probably done 5000 miles in the last 10 years and is exactly like a new car . Serviced every 12 months, it gets exactly what is needed and the underside is as clean as the top.

Heres the underside to give you some idea of how clean this car is.

As Al's 280CE used to be mine, I can atest to the fact that his is not quite that clean.

Al, I crosschecked on EPC (mind you, if it's the same as on the 350 SL, I'm also interested!) but unfortunately in my case I couldn't establish that the 280 CE clutch plate was the same as for the 350 SL and 190 E. But it is the same for all L6s of the era (108/109/111/113 etc.). I would be cautious with what aftermarket dealers advertize: in my case, I was happy to find standard and even beefed up clutch plates for the 3.5. But the same item was also advertised for 4.5 and 6.3 engines that never came with a standard trans. I called them and it turned out that what they had was for the L6 engines, which has a smaller diameter and different splines for the input shaft. In your case that may not be a problem (unless you got one for a 190E which doesn't seem to be the same either). If you got one for a 3.5 by mystake though, I would be happy to buy it from you. You can easily check that by measuring the disc diameter of 240 mm and by seeing if it fits on the inputshaft of the 3.5 four speed trans you have.
