w111.021 62-65? 220seb/c coupe sat for 15 years
Having fun putting this thing back together.... wondering if i could get a little help from some experts....??
First Problem: Universal looking fuel pump next to tank is locked up. Bosch part number is 0 580 464 048. Wondering what i could replace it with? Don't know the fuel pressure specs...found 7-13 psi mentioned elsewhere in this forum. Anybody know if that's right....seems low for fuel injection. Anybody know a part number still available that will work and not break the bank like the MB $1100 one? Second Problem: Dont know what all the switches on the dash do....The only one that does anything is the rocker on the left that turns on dome lights. There are two switches that look like the standard pull-type headlight switch, one on left side of dash, one under left side of dash. Neither does anything that i can tell. Another switch left of wheel that looks like a key or something.....pulls a little bit out and springs back in....some sort of electronic choke or something?? Another one that twists left of the radio? None of these have any sort of labeling...thought someone would know. Also someone has changed the generator out for a small common looking alternator. That alternator is shorted to ground, so it is heating up as soon as i hook up a battery. Not sure if there is some cross reference someone knows of that people typically swapped that out for? It appears they also changed the voltage regulator along with it...the thing is small (about one inch deep and three by three wide) someone told me the original was much bigger? If anyone knows what i'm dealing with here, i could really use some help. I'm a young guy, only 28. The car is much older than me and i'm afraid all my knowledge is of newer vehicles. Just trying to bring her back to life. Thanks Tim London Kansas City, MO |

Knob left of the radio is the ventilation/heater fan. When you turn it cw you should hear a klik which puts the fan on. Then you go on turning and it acts as a potentiometer increasing the speed of the fan.
First knob on the left of the steering wheel (the one that looks like a key) is for the head lights. Fist click cw is parking light, second clik cw is low beam. When you pull you have the fog lights on. To shift to high beam you should have a button on the left of the foot well that you operate with your left foot. Second knob on the left of the steering wheel is round and is for the wheepers. pull it in first position and you have low speed. Second position gives you (relatively) high speed. |

New fuel pumps are available for less - I found one on European Parts Specialists, and I am sure Phil our sponsor here would be happy to help you. They come up frequently on ebay as well.
The problem with the alternator may be the voltage regulator. Try unplugging it and see if that stops the short. If it doesn't try unplugging the alternator. The replacement regulators are smaller than the originals.

Tim,
I am in the process of bring a 72 280se back from a long sleep in a barn. Hopefully I can add some insight. Here is a link to the electric fuel pump. That's the best price that I found for a new pump. If your car hasn't been converted to the new style pump you'll need a bracket and 3 isolators. The new style pump has an extarnal fuel return to the tank. Putting a tee in the return line at the tank is not a problem. However I found that the return check valve in the injection pump is different if the late style pump bypass is used. I understand that the you can just leave the bypass port on the electric pump plugged if you have the old style pump in the car now and don't want to change the return check valve. There are used pumps out there but to me a used pump wasn't worth the risk. http://www.europartsdirect.com/epc-items.asp I also found out that the gas tank in the MFI cars is quite complicated. I was able to get a metal stripper in town to clean out my tank. What a difference. Attached is a link to the Pagoda group. Their tech manual will help you understand the fuel system. http://www.sl113.org/wiki/Fuel/Start Hope that helps. It sounds like you have a fun project. Be sure an post pictures. Charlie |
