1966 200d timing

i checked my timing (roughly) camshaft to crank, when i line up mark on camchaft imabout a little less than a 1/4 inch from the mark on the crank..theres only one mark on the crank, anyone know how to measure how many deg. of stretch of the chain on this vehicle? also if anyone has specs to tell me what injection pump timing should be at?

Hi, as for the camshaft timing the older diesel really isn't all that finicky so long as your not early. As for pump timing it's not all that easy, it uses a drip tube, you have to remove the back pressure element on #1 cylinder then it seems the timing was 26 degrees set with 1 drip at full throttle per 10 seconds. It has been years since I did my last one like that but I still have the books.

ok so i need to set in it at 26btdc and then fine tune it with the drip method, do you know how to tell how many degrees your turning the crank is there a way to measure it? from the crank mark? any info greatly appreciated

The method is element removed starting at maybe 50 degrees btdc with pressure supplied via the hand primer pump. Rotate engine slowly while monitoring the drip tube, it will be flowing and as you approach the proper spot in rotation the fuel flow will quickly slow coming to a drip in 10 seconds. Checking the timing mark on the crank pulley will tell what the timing is. I believe this is done with linkage at full throttle. This is the point of full throttle injection start. If you are uncertain on some point ask as it is important. I will look in my TDM to be sure as to timing value etc.

For your degrees: You should first make sure the mark you have is sharp on TDC (on my 5.0 M116 there is some play and the damper can be fastened with a +/- 2 to 3° error margine. I wonder how you make sure you are at TDC on a Diesel though, as you cannot remove a spark plug to see if your piston is at TDC...

Assuming your mark is at TDC, then you can measure the circumference of the damper. Dividing that value by 72 will give you 5°, by 36 will give you 10°; by 18 will give you 20°; by 9 and you have 40° and so on. You can put marks on the pulley with that whitener we use to correct typo errors.

Or you can buy a graduated disc and fix it on your pulley.

There is a mark on the dampener specifically for that purpose.
