Another noises which bothers me.

I was hoping that the fan clutch noise resolution would also solve another noise.
The noise sounds like a fan rattling (like it is hitting something metal) or maybe bad bearings. It almost sounds like some bolts rattling around inside of a tin can. I cannot pinpoint the exact location but it appears to be coming from the front of the engine.
I always believed it was either the chain or the fan being off balance but it is neither.
Could it be the bad bearings in the water pump or something in the crank case?
I hear the noise all the time. Sometimes it is not as loud but its fairly constant.
Any suggestion would be much appreciated.

Pull the belts and start the engine. No noise? Put the belts on one at a time until you have the noise.

I have a similar noise since I replaced the fan clutch by another used one.

1 - Check whether the fan is touching the radiator. May be fine at standstill, but when moving radiator may move just a bit to the engine and touch the fan. In both my 250C and 280SE coupe I have had situations where the radiator was able to touch the fan (due to poor radiator installations). Fan clutch is one thing, but radiator position also causes the problem (check whether all guide rubbers are in place).

2 - Check whether you have a metal bracket that guides the ground cable to the engine that is loose. Not sure your engine has one, but my car has and the L-shaped bracket's spot weld broke loose and it was rattling against the engine before I found the problem.

Good luck,

Bert

I know that the fan is not hitting anything and as previously stated the fan clutch not it either.
Today, I was picking up some parts at the dealership and asked the guys their opinion. They had two suggestions: the water pump (which suspected already) and the idler pulley for the A/C. I will check them tonight. I hope it is the pulley(easier to get to and I have spare from the parts car).

Well its not the A/C idler pulley.
How do know if the bearings are going south on the water pump?
