I dont know if this will help anyone but when i was doing my 6 monthly underbody inspection last weekend i found the boot on the drivers side axle shaft was mostly missing and the shaft in poor shape so I replaced both this weekend. I have documented it on my website so if you need a copy go and have a look. all of the same period cars are done the same way! here is the web site

No but the manual tells you where to put them for everything from the 220 up to the 450 (mm out from the shaft hub flange). the original shafts needed them but the older shafts have been superseded at least 5 times now and are no longer handed (both sides are the same) and don't need the weights. the latest iteration is part number 107 350 43 10. When I bought these though they told me there were very few left and that there was a newer part number becoming available.
cheers

They make that cool sound like putting a playing card in your bicycle spokes!

I couldn't figure out why someone had installed pipe insulation on the shaft (which is what the zip ties are holding) except maybe to keep the torn rubber boot from sliding further up the shaft.

no I use a clothes peg to get the cool sound (that just aged me didn't it)

the shafts were wrapped in some sort of really heavy metal lined foam insulation. I had assumed someone originally did it to stop the shafts from whining - that's why they put the weights on them. I will remove it when I rebuild them and see what it actually is.
cheers

Thanks a lot for the great info. I have a 1976 450SL and am doing the same thing, only I am replacing the axles with rebuilt ones. Some of the pics didn't come out on my browser and I had a few questions if you could take the time... My first question is this: Once you remove the long bolt and spacer in the hub, the axle just simply pushes inward until is free of the splines? The rear spindle assembly doesn't have to be removed? How about the E-Brake? and Second: The pic of the inside of the differential with the clips you are talking about making a file and removing didn't come through. Do you think maybe you could email me the pics if you can still find them. Or maybe a diagram if not the pics... Thanks so much for the wealth of information... Louis

Hi Louis
sorry for the slow reply I am not on the site a lot at the moment, at least until I start on my slc anyway.
you dont need to remove anything else from the hub, just push out the shaft. the only reason you need to disconnect the shock and the brake caliper is to get the hub low enough to remove the shaft without undoing anything extra.
Pic of the circlips included below.
I'll check the website - it may have problems as I haven't been maintaining it lately.
good luck
Barri
