Chasing problems with the barn find and a solution

I've been chasing little issues with the '72 280SE 2.8 barn find. In doing so this week I inadvertently solved 2 problems in one fell swoop.

This week end I decided deal with embarrasing exhaust leaks. Once I got the car up on jacks I had a friend rev the engine while I investigate. What I noticed is that the exhaust would leak with gusto before the front muffler while very little exhaust came out of the tail pipe. HMMMMM. I knew that the rear muffler was split open on the bottom but still very little exhaust even through the split. So I stuck a light into the tail pipe and found a mud dobber nest. The rear muffler is DOA anyway so I decided to just remove it and I made up 2 straight pipes to replace the muffler until I could get one ordered. Once the rear muffler was removed there were more mud dobbers in the pipes leading to the rear muffler. A plumbers snake resolved that problem.

Well I cranked it up. What a awful noise, but hey, no more exhaust leaks and pleanty of exhaust flow out the tailpipe. The barn find will be parked until I get a proper muffler installed so the car will once again make a dignified noise.

As a side note. The car at times seemed to be a bit sluggish and I had been fiddling with an intermittent back fire through the intake. Both fuel mixture and ignition appeared to be OK (scratch head). With the mud dobbers gone, no more back fire through the intake and the car runs better than before. What a great weekend!

Post some pictures so we can follow your progress. I don't know what a 280 looks like even.

Don't you love when it's something wonderfully simple like that? Two or three things on my 250CE have sorted themselves out without any interaction with myself and my wrenches. Best of luck with your barn find!!

Unfortunately the remains of the mud dobber nests went out in the trash this morning.

This is what came off.

This is the temp replacement. It sounds awful.

What's sad is that I did the same mufflerectomy on my Alfa. The result is a sweet mellow sound. Too bad it didn't work with the barn find.
