Question (116.033) (M117.986) Adj. lifter cam vs Hydraulic lifter cam

Carry over from "UPDATE: What's the Clacking noise?"

Will a 1974 M117.983 solid lifter cam work in a M117.986, keeping the hydraulic lifters?

Of not, I do have the entire 117.983 valve train, available, how difficult would it be to take rocker arms, lifters, cams and cam towers from the older head to the newer head? I understand that I stand to gain 10-20Hp.

No, you'll need to switch the ball studs as well to mechanical. Hydrualic cams have barely any "Ramp" whereas mechanical cams have a softer ramp for the valve to ride. If you swap the cam, swap the corresponding studs and rockers as well.
Overall it may take an hour or two per side on your first time.
