W116 220D starter removal?

Umlaut's starter bendix now refuses to engage the starter ring. I am assuming that it may be old grease, car having sat for the past 10 years or so.

It looks fairly accessible, any tips or tricks I should be aware of?

Rebuilt vacuum pump is in and now that it's not burning crankcase oil, the engine is quite peppy...and no more smoke!

Hokay so I had about 15 min yesterday before class, so I got under the car and see that there are two allen bolts holding the starter on, from the bellhousing side?! Weird.

The only bolt that looks like a PITA is the rear starter brace bottom bolt on the engine mount/block side. Will the starter swing out sufficiently if the starter/starter brace bolts are removed...or in another words, do I need to fully remove the starter brace to remove the starter?

Won't get to it until this weekend.

Is the car a 116 300SD or a 115 220D?
Also the year of the car would be nice.

ARGHHH it's 60F and sunny here, and as soon as I leave work I have to head to class. I'd much rather be pulling the starter on Umlaut.

It's times like these that I have to remember that medical school will eventually pay off.

Had a few mins last night so I put it up on stands and took the two starter bolts out, followed by the bolts holding the starter to the starter brace.

Getting to the rear motor mount bolts seems to be an issue. A 17mm offset ring spanner fits but there is no clearance to swing it. I will borrow a 3/8" universal joint adapter and will try a 17mm socket next.

OK, a "wobble" extension and a 1/2" drive 17mm socket did the trick. Right tool for the right job, I guess. Pretty much removed the starter without having to get under the car.
