1968 280s M130 cylinder head crack!!!
When I took my 68 280s engine M130 -920 cylinder head out in engine repair class to clean and check for cracks yes there were 4 cracks. It will cause about $350 to repair. A new one will cause me about $375. I have a guy who have a complete m180 used engine from early 70s selling for $250 but will that engine fit my 68 280s? From my info. on that M180 stright 6 engine it only had 145 hp. my old 68 280s manual trans M130 engine made 185 hp. some one please correct me if my data is wrong.
Anybody know wher can I buy new or rebuild cylinder head? thanks dpl |

M130.920 is double carburetor 150hp from chassis mostly W108s and some W114s.
M180.920 is double carburetor 95 hp from chassis W111s and some W110s and some early (120hp due to large carburetor) W114s. injected M130 is 185hp, M127 (injected version of M180) is 125hp. tell your friend to borrow his M180 cylinder head and test fit it in your M130 block. I found a 250(M130) head will bolt right up in a 2.8 M130 block but that will increased slightly it's CP due to 250's small combustion chamber, as for the cam gear, rockers, towers, valves and springs, they're the same, the cams of 250 and 280 are different in profile. p.s. just try fitting the head in the block |

There were a lot of little design changes in the M180 & M130 engine families over their lifespan.
Before you casually swap a head from one motor to the next, compare the headgaskets and watch what happens to the water jacket holes. They changed constantly to address issues with coolant flow. Blocking a few ports will be bad for the health of your motor. Having said that, what are the casting numbers on that bad 280 head you have? Thx -CTH |
