Just bought a 280C!!!

I have been looking at this car for quite a while. It has been sitting at a repair shop here in Tucson, and I figured that they would probably want too much money for it. I talked to one of the mechanics who said that the owner of the shop would sell it cheap. Not knowing if it ran or not, I offered him 300 bucks and he said yes! I just got it home and haven't had time to really try to start her up, but the engine turns well when I turn the key. This is a 73 which looks just like my 250C, only it does not have any rust. Was originally anthracite metallic with burgundy interior, but somebody painted it Earl Scheib burgundy mettallic and reupholsterd the seats in a combo of red vinyl and ugly red velour. Here we go again!

As the owner of a free 250C, I expect to see posts from you with the same gripes and posts of joy as you will see from me trying to restore a 30+ year old car to its former glory. My 250 MIGHT be done before I die, but thats only because I will die of a heart attack from the shock that its finally finished. Any advice on suppliers for glass and rubber for mine? It suffered a engine fire from the infernal zeniths untold years ago, managed to find replacments, but still have rewiring to do and all the rubber on mine turned to stone about ten years ago. Any way, good luck and enjoy

This kind of story burns my a$$. Mainly cause I never find deals like this. Of course if I did, given the climate here I'd find it was rotten under the respray. Oh well no room in the drive or garage right now. Congratulations and good luck, keep us posted.

It's good to know that there are at least two of us odd enough to own both a 250 and a 280.

I offer you this 280 owners' wish:

"May your engine start and run and move the car forward and backward when you put it in gear and the rear end not howl and the brakes stop you. And if its not too much to ask, may your cams all have good lobes and all your cylinders have at least 120 psi compression. And if its really not too much to ask, may the Solex not have warped plates ..."

Thanks everyone for your kind words...now the work begins. I went out this morning and checkked the wires and cap and stuff and got it all hooked up in the right order. It was missing 3 plug wires. Sprayed some starting fluid down the primaries and it STARTED RIGHT UP, but then died. I am not getting any fuel to the carb. The mechanical fuel pump has a sort of hose junction on the fornt of it, which was loose. I pulled the fuel line(from the tank) off of the pump and it was bone dry. Step to the rear of the vehicle. Cardboard on the desert ground and I am under the car inspecting the fuel lines connected to the tank, and what is this ? Appears to be an electric fuel pump installed! At any rate it is not pumping any fuel to the carb. I have no literature on this car yet. Does anyone know which fuse would be used if someone added an electric fuel pump or where the relay might be?

Corey,
Also check out some of the other websites if you need seperate pieces of rubber. thebenzbin.com has a good selection and looks reasonable too. Adsit Co. has some good used glass, but I am not sure what they have left for 114 coupes.

coupe overload

Does that make me really odd for having a 220se, 250se, 250c, 280c & 350slc (all coupes). Though I tossed the 350slc & 250c last year when I build the new 4 car garage.

Adsit is the "Tiffany's" of Benz parts. Sure they have it, but you will pay through the nose for it. I giggle at their prices and use their catalog for parts numbers only as do most Benz nuts I know. Even a modest amount of shopping around will save you big $$ over Adsit. They're a brutal last resort in my humble opinion. I have 4 MB's over the years, all needed just about everything and have never ordered parts from "Tiffany's."

Try "bigbabo" on ebay as mentioned above for seals.

I agree that Adsit is outrageous! But I have not seen any other company online that will send you a windshield. I contacted silverstarrecycling.com and they said that a windshield would be too fragile to ship. I need a windshield too! Any suggestions? I would be glad to avoid the "Needless Markup" of Adsit, then again I didn't think that 95 bucks was a fortune for a used windshield.
