Steering box swaps
I met a guy who has numerous steering boxes for various Mercedes from the '60s and early '70s. He isn't sure if he has one for a 1973 220D w/power steering. As these boxes re hard to find, anyone have an idea if I could use one from an older 115 or another model mercedes of the same era?

I dont think so 73-80 were pretty much the same but pre 73 are not also unless the boxes are rebuilt I would steer clear (could not help that one no pun intended ) They are not too bad to buy refurbished and then you are sure they are OK. The trouble to get them out and back in merits making sure you have a good box. have you thought about rebuilding the one you have?

114 & 115 do have vin. splits. The early and late box can not be exchanged.
114.010 - early 114.011 up to 014370 - early, after 014371 - late 114.023 up to 009058 - early, after 009059 - late 114.060, 114.073 - late 115.010, 115.110, 115.017, 115.114, 115.117 - late All 123's take one box. A late 114 or 115 may bolt in but does'nt have internal stops, your tires will rub on the brake support track rod. Last edited by thegearboxguy; 12-12-2009 at 01:42 PM. |

Back in '88, I was able to replace the worn-out manual-steering in my '72 W115 220, with a power-steering system from a '70 W114 250C parts-car.
The steering-box bolted-up OK, though I did have to telescope the 220's lower steeriing shaft a bit shorter to make up for the larger 250C steering box. Since then, I've observed the W115 power-steering box is also a bit shorter than the 250C unit I used. The 250C box worked fine, though perhaps with a bit more steering assist than a correct W115 box would have provided. I sold the 220 shortly after and saved no VIN record for that car. Happy Motoring, Mark
