Sound Engineer/Technical stuff for the BBC and commercial radio in London, 'been working in broadcasting since I was 17. I'm starting to get fed up with 'media types', and seriously considering moving to the country to fix & restore old Mercs for a living... seriously miss the old W108 I had to sell after divorce, but I really enjoy working on these cars, would be nice to get paid for it

Talking of MB owners acknowledging each other, my best one was sitting at the lights in my 108, and I head a big 'hooonk hooonk!' from the other side of the street- it was Jeremy Clarkson from BBC Top Gear in his green 600 Grosser

Interesing note here on MB owners interacting with eachother. My current Mercedes (never selling her, unlike the last two) is a '70 250CE. She is not a show car, nor would anyone mistake her for one. But she IS a totally original survivor. I imagined that living in Tennessee (this has been my new home for the last two years.) Nobody would notice or care.
WRONG
Everyone loves Wilma!! Guys with Mustangs, BMW's, Cadillacs, even jap cars. I couldn't have been more suprised. My old Merc gets plenty of attention. Interestingly though, one of two things happens whenever I pass another Mercedes owner. They either A; don't even notice, or B, their heads spin around to observe my 250 for the maximum ammount of time, usually to the point where they have to swerve and avoid light poles.

I've never had an owner of a pre 1990 Mercedes ignore Wilma, but almost everyone with an '00 or newer fails to notice her entirely. Interesting eh? Sorry for my poor grammar this morning, we cleaned out the basement yesterday (and they day before that, and it rolled into last night) and I'm exhausted.

Jive Turkey,

I've noticed the same thing about getting noticed with my 108. Even the wife likes the barn find. She couldn't have cared less about my sporty cars. This year when I went to the Alfa Romeo/British car Christmas party there were a bunch of interesting & exotic cars, even a Ferrari. But it was the barn find that everyone wanted to see. Who would have thought that a stogy old sedan would draw attention.

The late model MB guys are a different story. On one occasion I went to the Mercedes boneyard and asked if he had any 108's. The guy said nope, I crush 'em as soon as they come in.

still with the bbc? we get a few hours here on a public radio station (KPCC) in los angeles - actually, one hour of cbc (10 to 11 pm) and then several hours of bbc-world service until national public radio comes on. a real treat to get a different (and better, i think) perspective, and more in depth, reporting.

( of course, there is the old joke about beaming the bbc into germany during ww2; something about "boring them to death"? )

Hehe, yea the the world service is quite dull- I've had a few friends work there and leave soon after as the shifts/pay/content wasn't great.

I work for the BBC's dedicated London station, so it's a bit more lively...

Funny you guys mention that, I've not driven my 6.9 in months because of a series of issues. A couple of days ago, I decided to get going on it and sort out the suspension problems and the other problems that I was having. I finally got done and took it to a blast to the gas station so that I could put some fresh gas in it.

An older guy in an old 240D pulled in as I was pulling out, I nodded at him and he looked at me like I was a lunatic.

I guess I'll get my feel good factor from driving my MB's and if I want people to wave at me, i'll drive my MG.

uh, did you consider that his vehicle has one fifth? the horsepower (and torque) of yours? ( i.e. envy?)

i've seen (and continue to see) a few 6.9's here in l.a; we in the know usually give a nod and a stare, out of respect and awe, knowing these cars may soon be seen only in museums

Oh man really?! I'm taking a 300 level class at my college entitled, "Basket weaving for the modern man".

I figured the minor would go well with my degree in English.

In reality i'm a student who hopes to be a sound designer currently working in the ever invigorating field of information technology.

This past semester I was able to listen to the BBC's News Hour off of WKSU in Cleveland. I absolutely love those radio personalities. They crack me up. They always talk up their facebook page and their stories rival that of NPR's.

Sadly I have to get up at 7 now so I won't be able to listen toMary Ann Seighart and Claire Bolderson. I love 'em!

I am a telecommunication technician for 'the death star' company . I work out in the field and enjoy it. I drive a W108 in the warmer months due to a chronic hard start issue during the cold months.

Today some gentleman waved me a thumbs up as he drove beside my 300D in his 300SD. I waved back and acknowledged him.

But I do get snobbish remarks from others who I wave to first, which makes me realize they're not enthusiasts (or else they would know, and wave back).

Going back on topic, I am a Biologist for a well known medical device company in Irvine, CA.

I know the feeling. I wave at nearly every w123 I see.

In the summer time I drove past another 300D which was gray. There was an older man with his wife and what appeared to be two children. I had my sun glasses on and this was around the time I just got the car so I waved and the man looked at me with a smile and waved back.

When I was near Manchester Ohio there was this lady driving this beautiful w115. I didn't get a chance to see the model but man it was such a beautiful car. She waved at me and I smiled and waved back.

However I also get the, "what are you thinking" looks as well,

There was this guy in Ithaca who drives a near mint 300D. It's manganese brown and just so beautiful. I've never seen the color in such near mint condition. He just gave me a dirty look and a "What the heck" type of wave back.

Another w123 I saw I waved at had two girls in it and they just laughed at me

Either way it takes a special person to drive a 24 year old diesel car. I'll wave at every old mercedes that I see on the road
