got my 67 250s running after sitting for 7-8 years...now transmission questions
Hi,
I just bought a 1967 250S that have been sitting for 7-8 years. Thanks to all of those members here with good pointers, I got it running...it purrs nicely. I shifted it into reverse to back out of the parking space. It went about 10 yards. I stopped to put it in Drive to drive forward but nothing after that; no forward or reverse gear seem to be engaging. I checked the fluid level and it has some but seem to be a little low. Will adding some fluid work? If so how much? |

Yeah those transmissions like to be full of fluid. Just put a little fluid in it at the time until your level is at the top mark on the stick. Remember check it with the motor running.

Thanks...will do it. What type of fluid? OEM MB fluid or any transmission fluid will suffice? Another question. While sitting idling, I stepped on the brake and the engine seem to be revving higher. I also heard some hissing at the brake pedal from the inside of the car. I think there is a vacuum leak. Am I right?

Lots of leaks in a car that has been sitting. Get each system up to par one at a time.
The transmission needs type A fluid, which is no longer available as such. Just use a Dextron fluid and indeed watch the level. There is a double acting solenoid on it that will need to be checked for proper function. Be sure to do that too (search the archives for details). Be sure to replace the flexible rubber hoses as they will have died years ago (again, read the archive posts about them). Thx -CTH |

Sounds like a leak or issue with the vacuum line for the booster...
or the seal(s) in the booster itself |

Yep, you have a brake booster leak in the diaphragm----just like mine recently. Betcha the brakes take a stronger push to get stopped. It'll also pop out of the intake on throttle applcation, too lean ---and if you drive it that way too long, a bad thing may happen to the valves, piston etc.

Have you price out a new unit? I hope it is not going to be an arm or or a few fingers. Do you know if it is compatible with any other models?

Looks like a booster will be about $330.00 to $350.00. I'll bet with a little hunting that price can be beat. BTW, for the europarts website just hit home and that will take you to a search page.

Back to the transmission issue. The fluid was a little low but wasn't to the point where the transmission will not shift. It was a rod linking the lever at the tranny to the column shifter. At the ends of this rod there are 2 eye shaped type fittings, one at each end, that slip over a ball shaped bolt. The busing to keep them in place were all worn out and the rod just slipped off. I went to a local MB part counter and they were able to sourced them and the total was $30 for the bushings. I set the lever at the transmission to "D" and started the car and it went forward to the parking spot. I can't wait to get the part to get the car running. I am hoping that I will not run into any other problems but that is just wishful thinking.

Oooooooo, a nice clean one--not much rust. Deserves a "refreshing".
I've got a greater distance to go but will be worth it. sparky |

thanks, it needed new tires. I found a good set of used Michelins with Brunt rims from a W116. Will these fit?

Yeah, the seven-letter-word. It's probably good that I don't have more.
