Needing some interior advice/direction!

Hey guys,
First off I would like to say that I have loved being on the forums this past year. Very helpful people on this forum!

Im currently looking for a cheaper way to have my door panels redone on my 66' coupe. I called World Upholstry a few days ago and I was shocked when they told me their pricing for the door panel "kit". Im no stranger to things being expensive for these cars, but $2200 just for refinishing the door panels seems a bit ridiculous. Anyone found an alternative to that type of pricing? The panels I have are in decent shape, but the map pockets are in awful condition; rotted through and whatnot. The rear panels are starting to come apart from the backing and have started to become very hard & brittle. Maybe I should find some old ones for sale and re-dye them? Anymore help or direction as to other options would be great. Thanks!

Josh K

Upholstery

Josh,

I would suggest that you search out some of your local auto upholstery shops. I have used several in the SF/ Bay Area to remanufacture panels for me, with excellent results. The cost was not that high as well.

I just took my map pockets off my interior, it gives you a lot more legroom.

I am with Dave, many local body/upholstry guys can do this type of work. I too left the pockets off my W107 - took too much room!

I agree about getting quotes from local upholsterers to save money... you can also contact Tops and Seats and GAHH to get "trim material yardage" quotes.

For reference, here you can see GAHH's prices aren't for the faint of heart neither. FWIW, MB Classic Center utilizes GAHH if needed.

Have You removed the door panels? If You dont, do it! You will notice that the door panel covering surprisingly easily and "cheaply" done - if the map pocket is not counted.

I will renew the door panels by myself on my W108 250S -66. The MB Tex artificial leather is provided by a local dealer, who will also cover the map pockets as well as the upper lists on top of the door panels.

I have no removed the front door panels as of yet. I have taken the rear panels off though. The more I look at it the more I think it would be easy to recover the fronts by myself. Im fine with doing MB Tex in the car as its going to stictly be a drivers car. I want it to look nice and keep the original look, but MB tex is fine by me. Anyone know how much the MB tex would run?
