Fintail Brake Booster

Hello Peaches,

I believe that my brake booster is in need or repair or replacement:

The car is not leaking brake fluid (anymore). I have replaced the brake hoses, wheel cylinders and brake shoes. The pedal will be hard immediately after bleeding and the brakes could throw me through the windshield it I stomp on it. Then the pedal starts getting softer, and softer until I am pumping the brakes again to stop the car.

I disconnected the line to the manifold and plugged it. Now the brake pedal is consistent in feel, but requires a lot of foot pressure to stop the car. This type of brake booster is not located on the firewall like a modern car, but located near the front next to the radiator.

Is there a kit for rebuilding this brake booster? They are no longer available from Mercedes, and if they were I could not afford a new one.

Thanks again!

Jeffrey

I have two or three of those boosters And no car which would use those.
I know one of those works, as I "rebuilt" it once before I just bypassed the power system altogether
This was an early 1960 220SEb with drum brakes. It stopped perfectly as long as the brake shoes were good.
The booster has an additional master cyl attached to augment the firewall mounted system.

Are your wheel cylinders good?
These use the same parts kits as a 61 Buick, The internals are inch dimensions I bought the kits at Pep Boys.

PrivateMessage me if you want them (cheap)

Here is info on rebuilding the ponton booster. I would assume yours is similar. Also, the source of the rebuild kit is still applicable.

I'm working on acquiring a fintail PARTS ONLY car --- the structural frame has completely rusted away.

Len,

That page contains malicious code. My anti-virus software would not let me open it. You should notify Jeff Miller about the problem. My laptop that didn't have anti-virus software got infected after viewing pages; I suspect the Ponton site.

x2 on the need of the booster or prefrably the rebuild kit..earlier link shows an earlier booster than our cars though similar still doesnt help source the rebuild kits, hmm grim quote from the website

As an aside from Will, he did indicate that parts suppliers are dwindling and he does not know if he will be out of parts on 6 months or 6 years, so you might want to think about whether you want to get a rebuild kit just to have for future use. Contact information and prices as of October 30, 2001

Necrosavant,

Check your computer soon! I got a nasty spyware that I could not remove after visiting that website. I had to reformat my hard drive and reload my operating system and programs.

Got to walwarebytes.org and download the free program. I use Trend Micro and it said the website is a bug factory.

Hi Jeff - I did report it to Jeff Miller, but I'm not sure that's the cause of your problem. I was there yesterday and again today with no issues.

One of the modules with Trend Micro Security Internet Pro tests web pages for malicious content. I know that Jeff Miller would not put something bad on his site to hurt us. Some hacker type individual attached something hidden that will download to your computer when you download the page. When I click on that link for mbzponton, Trend Micro Security blocks the content and says it is infected.

The laptop that got infected did not have any protection but was used for work programs, checking email, and visiting sites major sites like ebay and craigslist. The mbzponton site was one of a few smaller sites visited.

Len.

I'm going to chime in here, since when I visited the link, my virus protection program (Norton running on Vista) went crazy. I know just enough about Norton to realize that if it sees something, then I don't want to view that page.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the PC you used to visit the link is probably infected.

Good Luck

took booster apart real simple design, the only hard part/nearly impossible you have to pull a long cable out from the housing to release the front cup PITA#*!! best to start spraying pb lubricant for a few weeks before trying, then take a torch to the booster Lots of cussing happened...
i found 2 repair kits for the brake slave that i ordered 0005862943/0005862843 hopefully somthing actually comes i think i need the main diaphram too looks like it shrunk with age

COOL!!

I hope you are taking pictures!

I was planning to make a main diaphram since they are "no longer available". I have a rivet gun. There must be sheets or rolls of diaphram material for sale.

Hard brake lines replacement solution.

Fedhill products sends a kit and lines. I redid my 6.3 cheaply

Those nuts seize into the threads all the time after 40 years.

I have three boosters to offer the group.
