RPM Cycling on Cold Startup
Upon cold startup, car cycles from normal idle to approximately +500 above normal in approximate 2 second bursts. I'm used to cars normally holding above idle until warm and then settling down to idle. Is this normal for a 72 280 se 4.5 liter? If not what might be the culprit? Thanks in advance to all. Doug in Louisiana.

Could be the Idle too high, causing the automatic fuel shutoff to kick in, when rpms drop it fuels up agin. This feature was designed for coasting to save gas. When rpms go above 1200 with foot OFF pedal. Gas shuts off completely. Try to turn the Idle adjust screw in. car should Idle around 800. I had the same problem on mine.
