mercedes 250ce
please advise what in what years the m114e engine was used in the 250ce and what type of fuel injection was used on this engine,i.e., mechanical or electronic? my guess is the engine used from 1968-71 was a 114.980 but i do not have a clue regarding the fuel injection. i am also aware the car was not sold in the u. s. i currently own a 71 carburated 250c and am toying with the idea of switching over to a fuel injection based power plant. any help you can provide regarding the m114e engine will be greatly appreciated.

visit the vintage forum. There's a live thread by user JiveTurkey about his 250E restoration.
The motor was called an M114E, which is a D-jet fuel injected version of the 2.5l M114V (carbed) motor. To turn one motor into the other, swap the head and then find all the intake and fuel parts. Far easier is to find an M123 manifold. That's the 2.5l motor introduced in 1977 along with the W123 chassis cars. Finding that will be very difficult. But if you do find one, you can use a simple rochester 4bbl carb or a tbi setup from a chevy. Another manifold possibility is the unimog manifold from an M180 motor. There are some varients of these venerable straight 6 motors that had a single carb. I've never seen one, so I'm not sure what the base looks like. Probably similar to what you have now, but a single flange instead of two. Having gone past your exotic options, You could, in theory try two throttle bodies with a megasquirt controller. Search the forum for other megasquirt combinations. They're there. Thx -CTH |

Are you sure you don't have an M130? Wikipedia indicates that the coupes all got the M130, but their information in that area is a little suspect, since the page has a table listing the 114.011 (of which I have one) not going into production until 1972. Mine's a 1971 model with a January 1971 build date.

that wiki page has more errors than an early Mets game.
The 250/8 had a model break in mid 1971 where they stopped using the M114 motors and switched to the same M130 as in the 280 models. This applied to both the coupe and sedan. Also, they didn't make the 250/8 after the 1972 model year. -CTH |

If you want to go for a later engine, I have a fuel injected 2.8 M110 engine from a Euro 280SL gathering dust in the back of my garage.

I think in England they kept up 250 C / CE sales until 74ish. Thats from the rusty back section of my brain though, I've had a bit to drink after a 10 hour day in 27 degree weather.

oh, and that's nitske's book. It's a good source of incorrect model info.
However, in this case, it might well be right. I just dug out the 1974 Technical Data Manual and it indicates that the 250 and 250C were "current" in 1974. -CTH Last edited by cth350; 02-13-2010 at 06:39 PM. Reason: accuracy |

Hello,
Yes that electronic fuel injected motor is the best powerplant used in those W114 coupes and sedans. Very scarce over here. I owned both the carb version and the "E"version. The "E" is a pleasure to own, perfect hot or cold starts, excellent warm and cold idle, good power, no hesitations, stays in tune. Mercedes replaced this with the M110 double overhead cam injected engine which had only a bit more horsepower, a lot more complication and lot more weight than this "E" motor. ? I also put many mechanically injected 280SE engines in these W114 coupes and sedans. These M130 injected engines had even more horsepower than the "E" eninge. Turns these cars into AMG style performers. Zero to sixty times of 6 seconds if you pull a little weight off also. Used one to rally years ago. (Chuck's new engine). Anyway if you do find a "E" engine your biggest challenge would be to transplant the complex wiring harness and brain box to run the electronic injection. These days if I were doing a transplant, I would use the simple and light M103 engine out of the W124 cars (300E). Lots more power, less weight and simple (single overhead cam six over 200hp). In addition these powerplants are plentiful in the wrecking yards.

Just a thought. I've often thought about what my W114 would do with a 5.0 HO Ford/T5 swap in it. I think it would be a riot to drive.
