About brake pistons.
Hi all!
I´m refurbishing the W108 brakes. The well stucked front brakes are first in agenda. Today I tried to remove the pistons with "grease pressure gun" (rasvaprässi in finnish, how do You call it?) and realised that in both calipers the other piston was much more tightly stucked in - why that, does anyone know? See how someone years before me had tried to remove the piston with wrong method - and had broken it. |

BUMP (for brake Expert)
yes, that's a "Grease Gun" over here too.
I heard of Techs using Air Pressure to Blow Out the Caliper Pistons. (Certain risks involved) [Also, with Two opposing Pistons how would you work either method?] ['Free one piston and then using ever smaller thicknesses of wood blocks between the Two force the other out?] You can see the corrosion line on the left hand Piston in your picture.

I've used both air and grease to force out pistons. A c-clamp will hold one piston while the other is forced out. Be careful of fingers, especially when using air. And if using air cover the caliper with a rag/cloth to catch the brake fluid that will be flying everwhere.

You need 1 new piston to replace the cracked one - I'd see if you can find good used calipers for the front, or source rebuilds which probably is easier to do in Europe than in the US.

dismantle the caliper
There is a very specific warning not to dismantle the two halves of the caliper ,why is that so.

I rebuilt the brakes on my 500SLC. It's not worth it. the cylinder bores could be rusty and may need to be honed. I used air pressure to pop the pistons out but all said it took a long time, it's risky, the kits are not that cheap and rebuilt ones from Autozone etc are not expensive.

About the prices; the normal cheap prices are there for normal 60 mm. piston front or 42 mm. piston rear calipers - but when it comes to the W108 and the type 1. W115 front 57 mm. piston brakes the prices are different, around 260 $ one. |
