Neutral Safety Switch removal issues 72' 250C
Hello,
Can someone tell me if I need to drop the transmission on my 250C to remove the neutral safety switch. I tried to remove the NSF but there is not enough clearance between the gear selector shaft coming from the transmission and the floor panel for the NSF to come off. It seems the shaft is about 1/2" too long to remove the part. This doesn't seem right to me as I'm sure this part was designed to be removed without heavy work involved. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. |

I dimly recall doing this on a 280C and I believe that I had to drop the transmission down using a bottle jack after removing the rear support. I think it's the same drill on a 250C. Keep an eye on the radiator hoses and trans cooling lines as you drop it.

CTaylor is right on. It's a very tight fit up there, but removing the Xmemeber and dropping it down a little makes it a lot easier. Cautions are all well founded too. Watch the shift linkage too. As I recall it has to be disconnected.

I think you're right about the linkage. Good time to renew the bushings.

Some items to watch out for -
Sometimes, one or more of the three switch mounting screws is corroded into the aluminum tranny case. (One time I had to install a new switch with just two screws as I couldn't extract the broken remains of the third) Last time I got one of these switches, they sold me a replacement coupler sleeve. It's a bronze or brass sleeve that mounts on the shaft over the switch, connects the shifter to the switch, and provides a fine adjustment so that neutral/backup-lamp functions operate at precisely the right moment. The old coupler sleeve is sometimes found to be cracked or broken. Once you unbolt/remove the shift link from the coupler & tranny-shaft, it should be possible to slide the coupler off the shaft, possibly providing more wiggle-room to get the switch out. On reassembly, be sure the teeth on the coupler are engeged with the drive-slots in the switch. Happy Motoring, Mark
