Lightbulb 111 Body Coups and Convertible Owners

I'm looking for some nice people who are interested in trading tech tips, restoration idea's, pictures, even parts for these rare Mercedes. The SL's have there own section, why can't we. The 111, 112 c/c were built in far fewer #'s and were more expensive than most any Mercedes except the 600.

So those who have these fine cars, Speak UP!

I've got a 16,000 original mile '67 250SE Cabriolet. She doesn't see much road use, except for going to shows, etc...

My daily driver is a W108 body 280SE. Can't beat 'em!

Pictures ! Well I can do that, as soon is I figure out how to scan them into the site. I little background on what I have:

I have a 1969 280SE Coup, All Cream exterior with Conac leather interior (brand new). 4 on the floor, AC, Power steering, and factory tinted windows. The seats apear the be of the extra padded type due to overall the width.

The car was orginally two tone, Cream bottom and Chocolate Brown hard top. The Car has 86,605 original miles on it.

I also have a 1961 220SEb Coup, rumored to be one of the first ones buit. It has a sunroof, now has black interior, blue and white exterior (soon to be DB med red) no power steering, 4 on the floor, on AC no frills.

The car was orginally all white, with brown interior, was a Eurpoean spec car first titled in the U.S. in 1968.

More to come,
Mike

Mike,
I agree we need more particpants interested and contributing to the subject of the 111 chassis models. I would certainly like to get ahold of a parts manual in English that covers a 1963 220SEb cabriolet. It must be a rare item as I have never seen one offered on any of the MBZ sites. I just finished replacing the fuzzies on the rear quarter windows and the rubber weatherstrip between the front and rear quarter windows of my cabriolet. Ended up having to remove the rear seat, side panels and glass to accomplish the job. There is nothing in the original MBZ shop manual discribing the procedure and as a result it took me 4 hours to do the first side and and hour to do the other! I don't know how to post a picture on this site but you can view my favorite on the following link: http://www.geocities.com/greggbambo/1963_MBZ_220_convt.html. Gregg

Greg,

Very Nice!!!, I spent a little time out toward your way. I lived for a year in Flagstaff, AZ. Loved it!, makes the east coast look sooo dirty!

I may know a person who sells parts books for 111 coup bodies. I don't know what years he has but, they should all show the things. I have a 108 book I use for the engine, but when it comes to the body... I do what you did, learn the hard way. I changed the "fuzzies" out on the front doors, I took the glass out took everything apart. I figured that I might as well clean and fix everything else in the door all in one shoot. I'll get his # for you, his name is Jeff in Baltimore, MD.

What kind of wood do you have? I have always wanted a burl walnut dash and I finally have one in my 280SE coup. I am slowly refinishing it.

Mike,
In answer to your question, my wood is zebrano and fortunately it is in perfect condition. I attended the Denver Startech gathering and one of the reps was a fellow that restores MBZ veneers. I asked what it would cost to do mine out of curiosity and gasped at what this perfectionist would have to charge ($3000)! My projects right now are to finish installing the fuzzies on the front doors now that I have the back quarters finished and then eventually attack the interior underpad of my convertible top. I usually paint my own cars but the pollutant czars have made that almost impossible for the due-it-your-selfers. As a result I am having a professional glass bead it down to bare metal and repaint it. Some of the cars that I have painted can be viewed at: http://www.geocities.com/greggbambo/Bambo_rides.html.

Even though I only have approx 90,000 miles on the car and the engine just purrs, I am seriously considering swapping out my engine for a M130.983 with 185 HP and 67 or later compatible transmission. This M127 130HP really struggles in these high altitude mountains and I usually have to stay in the truckers right lane going up a grade. Also I understand that the later automatic trans starts off in 1st gear from a stop as opposed to mine which starts off in 2nd by design unless you stomp on the accelerator. Responses on this site have said that this would be an no modification swap if they can be found.

Thumbs up '70 280SE Cabrio owner

I just joined this list and am thrilled that someone is trying to start a 111 list (in english). I am currently in the process of restoring my car - working now on the interior.

Like many posters here, my restoration was the result of flooding in the back seat floor boards.

I will try to post pics soon.

Regards,

Peter Kaufman

71 3.5

I just sold my 3.5 cabriolet and can offer lots of advise on
restoration work that I did. (new interior, body work, engine
and front end work) This model is a work of art, but not too practical a car to have when you have 2 small kids bouncing off it as they pass it by in my garage. Why did I sell it? I am not so sure. I replaced it with a new CLK cabrio which may be far more reliable but hardly gets the looks I got when I drove the 3.5.

Looking for a new toy to play with, this time maybe a nice 6 cyl coupe with a sunroof.

01 S430 (big mistake)
02 CLK cabrio
00 Jaguar S type (best car I have ever owned)

Wow. A fellow 111'er!

Glad to hear I'm not the only one out there that has a 111 coupe. Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen another one on the road!

I lucked into mine about six months ago - A Euro model '66 250 SE Coupe with 75,000 original kilometers (that's what? 46,000 miles?). I had been driving it every day, until the snow started falling... So far, the only real work I've had to have done is getting the fuel injection tuned up (to prevent a problem I had with idle surge)..

SO! One thing I'm curious about is how you all go about deciding where to go if you want to get body work done.. There's a tiny amount of rust, however, the hood has become quite discolored - not sure if it's from heat in the engine compartment or just the age of the car.. Frankly, I'm afraid to bring it anywhere for fear of them f***ing it up; A car's only original once, right?

I'd look forward to hear any enlightenment from any of you..

Regards,

The tape deck of my Becker Mexico radio on my 220SEb Cabriolet is malfunctioning and I want to send it into Becker for repair. s anyone out there gone through the process and willing to pass on the steps necessary for removal? Also my clock is not working and I want to remove that also. Has anyone considered or accomplished a clock conversion to silicone movement? Thanks

Talk to Ed Ebel at Becker North America. They have a web site and 800# niether of which I have handy (check google). As for the clock, there are a number of posts here and on other MB email lists (check mbz.org) that go into detail about fixing clocks. In my opinion, it would be a shame to replace the classic movement with a quartz one on a car like yours but it can be done and VDO has the replacement movement (again, do a google search for VDO). Personally, I like hearing the older movement in my car - every minute or so the contacts make ...um contact causing a clicking sound. I like it but maybe that's me.

Good luck,

Peter Kaufman

Pertronix electronic ignition conversion

I am considering converting my point/condensor distributer system on my 1963 220 SEb cabriolet running a M127 engine with the Pertronix module ignition system. I checked with the manufacturer and was informed that if you have a Bosch distributor, model VJUR 6BR 49T, that Pertronix model #1864 will work. Is there anyone else out there with an old 6 cylinder injected Mercedes that has made this conversion. If you have, did you notice a difference other than not having to check you points forever more?
