the hot spark thing seems to be a better deal, but it's still neat. no interest thus far it seems.

I didn't know about Mr Durrance's system, I was talking about the 123 Ignition system sold by Brooklyn Motoren Werke.

http://www.brooklyn300.com/cms/introducing123

Seems like there system ends up being about like the one listed on that archived site. Entirely new setup...priced between $700-800...however it's getting a brand new distributor and all, and no extra ignition boxes to mount. The guys in europe seem to like them, not sure of many in the US having them (aside from the people with really nice cars and money to spend).

Just another option.

I have a link via the wayback machine but the background has taken over and it's wicked hard to read. I find dragging the mouse from top left to bottom right to makes the links stand out.

There is a ton of good stuff there, maybe someone can find a relative and get permission to create a new page?

I just received my Hot Spark on Saturday. The unit looks to be well made and their customer service has been excellent. I would definitely buy from those guys again.

I've read other reviews from people in other forums and everyone seems to say good things about Hot Spark.

I honestly don't know why anyone would pay $800 for a 123 ignition when they can be bought direct from the manufacturer for a lot less . Then, there is the
question of why on earth any one would fit one to a M110 when the factory set up is unbeatable. I have often worked on W126's with m110's that had spark plugs which were truly ancient with bad plug ends etc and they still ran fine...not as good as they could maybe but they would still start and run OK.

So maybe the system from HotSpark is a better points replacement for the M110 than the others (Crane, Pertronix and 123, for the money). Is the HotSpark setup a magnetic system like the Pertronix? I can't really tell from their page. I just hate how points wear out and have to be replaced.

The Hot Spark is a magnetic hall effect unit.

My only concern is how it handles leaving the key on for extended periods. IIRC, the Crane XR-700 didn't like it and the XR-3000 didn't care.

The Crane units are optical read LEDs and doesn't matter if you leave the key on. The Pertronix on the other hand did have a problem with leaving the system energized.

Thumbs up

oooooooooo! This may be my missing link for the TBI + MegaSquirt setup!

Can I physically install a points style dizzy into my '79 280S and use the Hot-Spark kit for the output to drive a Capacitive Discharge style ign box? From what I gather, a CD ign box (think MSD) will signal the MegaSquirt to drive my TBI unit.

Or is this unnecessary for what I am after?

MSD should be able to trigger of most anything, points, mag pickup, hall, etc.
Think it does have an output MS will like, but I'd think MS would use the signal from the pickup directly no?
