6.9L M100 Engine Identification

So I'm going to look at a SLC locally. One owner car. Yadda yadda. But apparently it comes with a 6.9L pulled from a low mileage 450SEL wreck years ago. Not sure why he is including it, since the SLC is nowhere close to needing a new engine. And you'd have to be certifiably insane to squeeze that sucker in there and make it work. Guess it's just cool to keep around or something. It's supposed to be complete though. Always stored indoors.

How can I easily tell it's a 6.9L and not just your run of the mill 450SEL engine? What it's worth (ballpark) to someone looking for a core/transplant? It's just gonna cost me extra to transport it and store it. But I will if it's worth it. Or I'll just tell him to keep his junk, because it won't fit in my trunk.

Go to the M100 forum and advertise it. I'd imagine it would be worth a grand or two.

a 6.9 doesn't have a real oil pan, just a very small sump underneath. The real oil tank is in the fender.

The valve covers have a flat black finish on them. I think the heads have m-100 cast into them, but you would have to pull one of the valve covers to see this.

There is nowhere to fill the oil on either valve cover. It would be considerably larger then any M117 engine that you'll see.

Yeah. So it was just a regular old 450SEL V8. No 6.9. Damn. That would have paid for the SLC I was looking at twice over. I guess one can dream....

But whoever pulled this engine years ago did mark it "6.9L 450SEL",a cruel joke perhaps. Especially since the guy who was selling this SLC truly thought he had a 6.9 in his garage.

Of course, the dead giveaway would be the "117" engine number stamped into the block.

On both motors, the engine number is stamped into the ledge of block behind the cylinder head on the motor's left. An M100 will start with 100. The 3.5, 3.8 and 4.2 motors all start with 116. The 4.5, 5.0 and 5.6 are the 117 motors.
