Key Blank

Hi,

I have a 1972 280SEL that has only 1 key. I would like to have a spare made, but am not sure where to buy, or what key model number to look for. I would like to have something like the original HUF key with plastic. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks...Jason

Jason,

Here is some very slight help....

I went through this with a fintale about a year ago. It seems the only source of HUF blanks is when they show up on Ebay.

If you live in a large city then try to find the oldest locksmith business you can and take your key to them. They might have a blank. A hardware store that has been in business for 50 years might have some as well.

HUF blanks, when you can find them, sell for around $10 each.

Jason, They're certainly available from your dealer or the MB Classic Center, with the square black plastic head. You could also get the secondary key with the round head.

The classic center is great. Jon will help you out. Just give him your vin# and he can send you out a new master key at a reasonable price.

As well as most any other part you might ever need for your car!

I saw a few on Ebay this week. I need some also but haven't shopped around locally.

Regarding classic center, I've called them on a few parts...I REALLY don't think their prices are reasonable at all. I decided to rebuild my air filter with the existing frame instead of popping $40 for a new set. The other items they quoted me seemed high also, even for OEM retail. That's too bad, since they're only 1/2 hour from me and I can buy so much more from them.

hmmm that's a shame. I don't know why they'd quote me a cheaper price than you.

I found a new master key for $13 versus $45 from the local dealer to be quite reasonable!

I also recently bought new OEM engine mounts, swaybox bushing set, and subframe mount set from jon at comparable prices to parts geek and Fastlane for all OEM parts. I went over and picked them up in irvine.

Find a good locksmith that has been in business for a while. I had a copy made just a mile from my house for $4. They just pulled a blank from the rack. Looked like a standard blank for newer MBs, but it works fine. Seemed like they had no shortages of blanks.

From New York to Irvine?

I have always wanted to visit the Classic Center, but I thought it was too far!

I live less than an hour from there but I thought it was too expensive (entry price)

I'm sure I'll check it out eventually...as well as the uber-elite Cars & Coffee in Irvine.

Hehe, I had happened to be in the SoCal area. I decided to pick up the parts I needed in person.

If you are in the area, check it out. I wouldn't drive cross country to see it. Although they do have some cherry specimens MB's throughout time. most of them for sale i guess..?

they most of all are nice people, ready to help out with my 35 year old car. Which I think is just great.

So I will be buying from Jon at the classic center. Their price is good and I have no worries about it being the right part. His communication has been great and I will definately be looking there first for my parts in the future.
