1974 280 steering problem
Hi there,
I'm new to this forum and have a technical question. My friend is asking me to help him with his 1974 280. A couple months ago he made a hard turn to the left while stopped and trying to pull out of a park space. He heard a bang and after that the steering wheel wasn't centered anymore and he had slop in the steering but the car was driveable. Now it appears that it has gotten much worse and he says he can turn the wheel 180 degrees or more before the wheels turn. Does this sound like a steering coupler problem or something else. I've never worked on a Mercedes before. I'm a VW guy. TIA |

STOP DRIVING THAT CAR!!! Check the steering box bolts. It sounds as though they have either broken or cracked the frame mounting area. It's a common problem with those chassis. Do a "search" on the forum for numerous fixes. It's an easy enough repair but can be a tad bit labor intensive. Of course, nowhere near as intensive as trying to remove the dent left by the big-arsed tree you drive into!

It is indeed broken bolts (2) on the steering gearbox. Yesterday I attempted to drill out the bolts with the g/b installed but had no luck. Looks like the next thing to try is removing the g/b and broken bolts then reinstalling with new bolts. I'll try to do a search for other fixes but right now that's where I'm headed.

There is a brand of bolts known as 'Unbrakeo' that have a sheer strength of 300,000 psi. You will have to contact a bolt dealer to buy these, and you might have to special order them, but they are not expensive and are much stronger than the bolts from Mercedes.
HOWEVER..... The frame needs to be checked and I would put a reinforcing plate in there as well. As long as you are in there you might as well do it right the first time. We are not talking about a lot of money here. If the frame is flexing then all the bolts in the world will not prevent the box from moving and cracking the bolts again. The only good news is that this is a well known problem and fixes have been established, tested and are known to work. |
