Does your M110 heat soak?

As in the gauge goes quite high when sitting engine off a few minutes after driving? Goes up quite high, 3/4 or so, right back down when the engine is started. This isn't indicative of something unfortunate I hope?

My M110 does this. Usually it will only heat soak up to about 100-110C on a hot day.

My diesel however only goes up a small amount when shut off for a few min.

Mine get's up to about the same temp. I've also noticed it will make a nasty ignition sound for a second or two that I was originally worried was chain slack waking around. It's related to the poor carb boiling the fuel out. I've never seen a diesel do this either with the temp stuff.

Well mine is fuel injected so I don't have any of those issues.

Have you ever paid attention to the temp gauge with the engine off before? ALL combustion engines go into heat soak after they are stopped. There's no coolant circulating, therefore heat builds up for a short while, and then it cools down.

It varies to what degree though, was the question. I've never seen a gas (or diesel) motor do so to the degree this one does is why I was asking.

Wilma does the same, I'll admit I have been slightly worried, but nothing catastrophic seems to have happened. I like having an honest to god instrument (capillary) rather than a guage.

In the 80's the little Renaults had the fan stay for a few minutes after switching off the engine ,a neat feature for soak dissipation.

Yeah it's not an uncommon practice. Good idea too, that is a boiling hot engine bay in this thing, so small.

Mine on the 73 is actually electric, but it seems to be plenty sensitive. I can see the rise above normal just before the thermostat opens when warming up for what that's worth. I really don't think it ought to get THAT damn hot sitting for a few minutes after even casual driving, but I haven't made a study of coolant passages are and where the temp sender is (pass side of head I think). I've sure never seen another motor be this prone to it.

Mine definitely does the same wolf. Sometimes if I'm sitting waiting for someone, I'll watch it rise up quick. If it's a hot day and I leave the key in position 2 it triggers the electric fan, which starts up at 212 degrees! pretty damn hot in there!

mechanic told me the same, "fuggedaboutit..."

My 108 and 116 280'S both did that. I never thought anything of it.
