220D/240D engine in 1960 ponton 190B
Hello!* I have a 1960 190B ponton, and i am playing with the idea of putting a 220/240D in it.*
I have seen this done before so i believe is not such a big deal. But my main question is: Will the stock column shifted gearbox bolt up to the diesel engine? I read somewhere that the stock tranny from a 190D would fit the 220/240D.* Note that i do not have the 190D but the 190B petrol engine, but its the same box right?* Other known modifications to do this swap?* Another thing, i remember that i read an article somewhere about installing disc-breaks from a fintail on a ponton? Is this possible? |

Maybe this belongs in the diesel section?

unsure about whether the gearbox will bolt up...perhaps the bell housing can be swapped? If so, then it is likely.
Remember, with a diesel you'd need a different type of ignition setup. Perhaps you can mount a switch somewhere to activate glow plug circuit. You would also need the correct types of resistors in order to accommodate whatever type of glow plugs you're using. On diesel pontons, this is done via a resistor mounted near the firewall, as well as on the glow indicator itself. Basically, lots of little mods will need to be done to get it to work. But definitely doable. Disc brakes? possible, yes, but necessary? on a 50hp car? no. |

Don't forget to change out the breather on the fuel tank. I don't know how vapor expansion was handled on those Pontons, but I know it was not through the cap like it was on 115's.
You need the correct volume of air entering the tank as the fuel is pulled out or you will pull a vacuum on the tank and crush it, and on the later cars the gas and diesel tanks both had different rates of air exchange. I should think doubling the air intake hose size would work, but you might need to check this out. Note that this would not be a big deal to do with the modification you are talking about but it would be one you would not want to overlook. |

Thank you both! That fuel tank buisness i would never have thought of!
Still my main question is this gearbox issue. I really want to keep the 4 speed column shifter. |

did you get an answer?
Hey Odmark91,
Did you ever get an answer on the gearbox mate-up? I have a '58 220S Webasto roof sedan, and have had thoughts of putting a 617 5 cyl. diesel in it. I have a possibility of a N/A engine that's been refurbished. I know the oil filter housing would need to be relocated. But I don't know if the stock '58 4-spd. transmission would bolt up to the 617 bell housing, or if the engine would even bolt up to the '58 bell housing/clutch ass'y. I also figure the motor mounts would need some mods, changes, etc... There's a pretty good list of changes to make, I think, but I don't have a complete list. Would like to see one though. Thanks, and good luck with your project idea! Bob |

I put a 220sb in a ponton. The oil pan was to wide for the sub frame, so I had to use the ponton pan. ? fly wheel. Will it fit in trans bell?? An old style fly wheel wont bolt up or be balanced. 220d trans has hydraulic clutch, and wont like the column shifter.??????? I put a 220d in a 200d. I had fly wheel clearance issues and major sub frame modifications.

Another consideration for putting a later engine in a Ponton is motor-mounts.
The Ponton's front motor-mount brackets were attached to threaded holes at the front of the engine-block. Later engines used aluminum brackets bolted to the middle of the block. Those later engines still had holes in front, sometimes used for accessories like power steering. But on some, the unused holes may not have been threaded. So check that your replacement engine-block has 4 threaded holes in front to fit the Ponton mount-brackets. Happy Motoring, Mark
