front crossmember, or front axle carrier as called in the w/shop manual, are the same. I would keep the W110 one as the 6.3 tend to bend due to the weight of the engine.

With a bit of luck your W110 driveshaft will be the correct length. Flange it will bolt on the flex disk.

I thank every one for the information. I'm beginning to lean back towards finding a 2.3(is that the m180?)

I really dont want to lose my manual transmission...

You could upgrade to a 280S. In any case, and whatever the option I would recommend you buy a complete donor car as you will have a lot of stuff to replace due to fire damage. So you will be able to make the best out of the two.

IM not following by what you are saying. Switch to a different car entirely? or just throw the under hood components from a 280s into my 230?
I havent been too lucky finding a parts car locally...

I'm saying you should source a complete donor car and transfer all what you need from it onto yours. It will be cheaper, easier and quicker than source all the parts one by one. When you're done you part what is left of the donor car and you recover part of the money if not all.

I got the complete donor car idea. Thats pretty much the only set plan right now... find a donor car.

what benefits would a 280s have for me?

The 280S would give you more power and torque and would not require any modification. This would be mostly a direct fit.

$1000 for a 6.3 parts car is not expensive. You can make much more parting it out. Does it run?

If you want to keep that 4-speed manual, than any mercedes 4, 5 or 6 cylinder motor EXCEPT the M189 (the older 300 motor) with the starter on the same side as the exhaust will drop in and bolt up.

You will have to deal with some wiring issues, as the entire wire harness of your car is compromised.

Upgrading to fuel injection will be a challenge but doable if you are patient and careful. But try for carbs anyway.

That's why I was mentioning a 280S as a potential donor. Though I hear carbs also have their issues.

Tomguy,

Funny you should say you wanted some more pictures, I had Anthracite out for an exercise this afternoon and took some more pics when I returned. The weather was great, there where some nice clouds, the temps where in the mid 70's, and the humidity was low, a perfect day! Right now my camera battery is charging up after being drained from the photo session. Hopefully I'll have some pics up tomorrow. Watch for a new thread, hope it makes you happy

You don't need another engine, you only need another carb and distributor .In fact if it were mine i could see my self just cleaning up the distributor and installing a new cap and leads etc.
I can see what caused the fire too. There should have been a steel hardline from the fuel pump to the carbs where there should have been a reinforced flex line connecting the pair . Someone has fitted rubber hose to carbs because there is no sign on the hard line remaining. the soft hose has failed and the engine,while running has pumped fuel all over the distributor,the fire has taken at the carb burning it so hot it melted. bTW the W110 is lousy choice for an engine swap because of the short nose .

Thant's indeed the simplest and cheapest option. You would need access to a donor car and take out all what you need.

It's a 6 cylinder already in there. I believe any other 6 cylinder or M116/M117 V8 would fit.
