Thanks 280SE guy. I don't ever plan on having my car professionally judged so I guess I am putting too much emphasis on the paint. I just want it to look original. I have the chassis all dissasembled so the parts are there but the paint is so old it's hard to tell what it looked like.
I am finally starting to move forward on my project. I have spent more on parts that the original purchase price and it's just a shell-a little disheartening to see boxes of parts everywhere instead of a car. I have to resist the temptation to just rebuild it without detailing the chassis as I go. It started out as a brake job 5 years ago and just snowballed from there.
Here is something I look at every so often to removitate me:

Those are amazing photos. Thanks for sharing them, although they do humble me in comparison. It truly was a pleasure just to see what this car looks like 'new'. Just imagine, not even Mercedes has photos of that quality from when they were new.

It's hard to put into words the beauty of what that car.

Ah yes, John's car. I also get motivation from other people's work, for example Karl Middelhauve also located in Wisconsin just a bit North of John. Speaking of parts check out Karl's stash, you can never have enough parts available to you.

There must be at least one "black color" part that you could clean up and take to your local body paint supply house. It doesn't have to be that big of a sample for them to scan.

Good luck with your project, with time you will get it back together and be proud of it when that happens.

JiveTurkey,

Not sure if that makes you a bad person but it would only be a one way trip for you, would probably be better with your girlfriend .

I was wondering where you had been hiding as you and JeffreyNMemphis had not responded to this thread all week. Glad your back in the saddle and working on Wilma again.

Sorry, I can't make any recommendations to you on the paint since the EPA screwed things up for "original finishes" a few years ago

Take care,

280SE Guy

Thanks 280SE, I'd been up in Ohio with my Girlfriend visiting her parents for almost two solid weeks. It was a very peaceful interlude as her home is comepletely without cellular service or high speed internet. In other words, bliss

Your car, as always, gives me hope for the future of mankind.

I crave ownership of that car so bad it's difficult to describe. Truth is though that I'd never be able to keep it in that condition and so for the greater good it's better that it's yours and not mine.

Glad you had a good time with your girlfriend and her parents. Two weeks is a long time. Ohio is a good place to vacation at this time of year.

Thanks for your kind remarks Peter. I'll keep her for now, OK?

Here are a couple of more pics I found from the last drive that were not posted when I started this thread. Hope you enjoy. As always comments and questions are always appreciated.

Wednesday is going to be another lower humidity day, might have to take Anthracite out for a spin and some more pics. Let me know if anyone would like to have a specific picture.

Can I request the one dirty spot on your car?

It's gorgeous. Maybe a straight on grille shot so I can see what a proper one looks like. Again, wonderful W108.

You only drive the car on low humidity days?? I'd want to enjoy that car as much as I can! Has it ever been taken above 3000RPM?

Yes it's true I only take her out on low humidity days. I like to drive with the driver window down so I can hear the motor better and always leave the radio off for the same reason. I've heard that some Pagoda owners (with the same inline fuel injected 6) install a rear from a 4.5 that has a lower ratio to keep the revs down because of the high RPM and engine noise.

I have enjoyed the car every minute since I bought her back in 1974

Over 3,000 RPM is not a problem as the motor loves to rev, the rear ratio is 3.92. The max RPM is 6,500 so I'll ease up on the throttle when she gets to between 5,500 and 6,000

Just ask JiveTurkey about humidity "90 degree heat and 934765934653% humidity"

280SE Guy
