1966 Mercedes 230

I have a chance to buy 1 of these locally that was restored back in the mid 80s
The problem is the present owner installed an after market stereo and the engine bay caught fire
How tough is it to obtain parts for this vintage?

The car up close

I went to see the car today and get a better look at the damage
Its such a shame that this happened to such a nice car
I believe allot can be salvaged but not sure if the wiring can be repaired or find a replacement
One of the carbs is useable but its a Solex and I havent heard much good about them
I would love to take this on as a project but I am in unfamiliar territory with this vintage

Well, one of you ought to "save" the car.
That is my story and
I'm sticking to it.

I have a 1968 200D W110 (which is my daily driver) and so far I haven't had a problem finding parts. I buy most parts from The Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in California and get a 15% MBCA member discount. I also get parts from http://catalog.peachparts.com/ Fastlane Parts (the sponsor of this site) for these models.

Solex carburetors are excellent. They are Original Equipment on Mercedes Benz, Porsche and BMW. Now you have heard something good about them. Any 50-year-old carburetor will need fresh kit to work properly, and it costs about $50.00 each.

The wiring in that car is very simple. It can be re-wired. I have a copy of the wiring diagram. Parts are easy enough to find.

That car could be saved. Everything you need to know can be found here. Best of luck!

The thing I am most concerned about is the wiring harness
Is there a place where this can be bought without hitting the wallet too hard

I also noticed it will need a radiator considering the fire got hot enough to unbraze the connections

I would so use a painless wiring kit and a cheap domestic engine in that car. It would vastly improve it's utility and ease the cost/effort of maintenance. Think TBI 4.3L GM v6 with an OD trans. I agree it's a shame and someone ought to have it on the road again, one way or another.

50 year old wiring that has been yanked and flexed around to remove then re-install would concern me some. Especially in light of that car's recent escapades. But there isn't a cheap solution other than used parts. If stock is required I would consider re-using the connectors and building a new harness with new wire. There's what, five wires on that thing anyway eh?

No worries. The Solex which everyone hates is the later 4-barrel Quadrajet clone off the DOHC m110 motor on 70's cars known as the "4A1". Your car has the earlier 60's dual Solexes which are a totally different design.
