1980 W116 280SE died a slow death today

and then was revived

It is in the high 90's temperature wise here in NY. On the way to work the coolant temp reached about 100 and then backed down. On the way home it hung right about 80. My drive is about 35 miles and about 25 miles home the car sort of hiccuped. It was almost like a sudden loss of all power for a quick moment. Then it slowly began what seemed like the engine was struggling to stay alive and with my foot still depressing the accelerator over the next few miles it continuosly kept slowing down. Eventually after backing up traffic for quite awhile it just quite moving. It was still running though. I shut the car off, waited a few moments and it started again and finished the trip without a problem.

What happened?

Sounds like it was starved for fuel for a while.

Does vapor lock occur on a fuel injected engine? It sure showed symptoms.

yes, and I've seen it happen on 280SE's specifically..

You might do a fuel pressure test on the car.

Oh yes. Very common issue on EFI cars.

Supposedly the pump was replaced just about 3-4 years and 20k miles ago (give or take). I would think it would last longer than that but apparently not.

Fuel pressure test here I come.

The 1980 116 is not EFI it's MFI. Or are we talking at cross purposes assuming EFI and MFI mean electronic and mechanical fuel injection?

Yes i know. MB Mike, didn't know if vapor lock could happen on a fuel injected car. Yes it can, it causes many issues on EFI cars, not so much on MFI from what i have seen.

Well there you go. I don't even know the difference between EFI and MFI. I thought all FI cars were EFI.

It's Porsche junk but the info applies a fair bit.
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_MFI/TipMFI.htm

Think of it as wannabe diesel injection.
