REPLY to 'External Parts Suppliers'

A ban on externals is fine, but when I look up my car, a 1965 220SE, parts shown are minimal, two categories. The car uses many of the ssame parts as the 230SL and the later W108 250S/SE. Why so few shown?

Tomguy, you might want to review your message. It looks like you might have left out a word.

True, the site may not always list every part for every application. You can always call Phil to see if a part is in stock!

There are many listings for 230/250/280SL's and the 250S/SE, 280S/SE/SEL and others that are common between these models, and the W110/111, than can be used. Not everyone knows this though.

Being a parts seller(but not Mercedes) myself I've always appreciated how at peace this forum manages to be when it is sponsored by a commercial outfit. It frequently isn't that way in such situations. I always welcome competition and such in my own venues, but to each there own.

The rule is mainly for a handful of direct online competitors that are frequently linked to, often ones that are more expensive than FastLane or AllPartsExpress. A lot of people find the forums via Google or another search engine, and aren't even aware that they can buy parts directly off this site! It's really meant to encourage members to help other members by linking directly to the FastLane or AllPartsExpress listing for the part(s) needed vs direct competition.

I am not discouraging open speech or thought on this subject, so I am leaving this thread open!

I'd pimp the parts more here if it was me, it is rather subtle, the fact that one can order parts from the site sponsor direct. Sticky with direct link to catalog for appropriate models at the top of each forum for a start maybe. Some links to commonly needed parts in a given section, I'm sure forum members could put together a laundry list quickly, we all know the same junk breaks on these things all the time. The banner is good but it's easy to overlook when you see adverts online constantly. This is and has been the best Mercedes forum online for as long as I can remember.

Having done some work with the online catalogs for one of those other vendors, it seems that everybody's working off the same basic database list of parts available aftermarket. So far, I've found three distinct catalogs. I've not bothered to probe them deeply because it doesn't really matter.

For parts that aren't listed, like somebody else already pointed out, just pick up the phone and call your favorite supplier(s) and ask. Gives you a chance to say hi and ask how the weather is in their state. Nothing like a little bit of human kindness to brighten a day and get a better discount.

That kind of information would truly add value. If the moguls who own this site were so inclined to compile and offer information regarding alternatives that work, then this site would be a "must" to join.

The members of this site would gladly contribute their wisdom and experience.

Who actually owns the site?

Another thing: I decided to check out the 1966 250SE listings for parts that can fit my 65 220SE. I checked the Fuel Injection link and several parts showed up, including the linkage sockets but when I clicked the part, a pop-up window appeared and said there were no parts in that category. Why have the selection?

Jeffrey, are you going to reply to my question?

I have to admit that I would give Fastlane and AllPartsExpress more business if parts for my 1968 200D W110 and my roommate's W111s were available on the site. The only part that comes up is A/C O-rings!

As I wrote before, many parts from the 230SL, 250S/SE/SL, 280S/SE/SEL/SL will fit. You have to know which ones.

And it is this which makes it not very convenient.
