Solex or Zenith, how does one tell?

The 67 fintail has twin cars, but not sure which ones. The choke is stamped "zenith" while I see some othe components marked "solex" (fuel jets I think). Can I tell by simply looking at them. I'm interested because I have read here that the solex is a superior setup. If I do have the zenith, is there a great deal involved with changing to solex?
Thanks for everyone's patience on these matters,
these vehicle are new to me, but I'm really becoming very fond of
them and want this vehicle to be as reliable and safe a possible, within my budgetary constraints.

Have a look at this manual
http://jaimekop.com/CarbManual/index.html

I've only seen Zenith 2bbl and Solex 4bbl carbs but my experience is limited to early 70's W114 cars.

Zenith

According to documentation, I would have the Zenith carbs. I will stick with them and do the rebuild. If I get 16 MPG and 0-60 in 16 sec., we'll call that good enough.

I dont see many fintails. But two are for sale here for $1,100 - for both. Just an FYI incase you have any interest in another or parts! And no, I do not know the seller. And yes, if I had the money these would be in my driveway!

My '71 250C had dual Zeniths. They were rebuilt by an rather retentive air traffic controller just before I bought it. The car ran like a top, started hot or cold and may have returned 14MPG in my mostly city commute.

My 1970 250/8 had Zeniths and didn't run well. I put brand new Webers on it and it didn't run well.

I owned one of these cars in the 1980s. A 1967 230S. The car has Zenith 35/40 INAT carbs, sometinmes called JNAT carbs.

A rebuild kit is available these carbs are used on BMWs of the same era. Rebuild kit used to be 18.00 I haven't bought one in a while.

The hardest thing about these carbs is the basic adjustment. People fiddle with them, instead of following the procedure in the service manual.

I have often found these carbs to be very dirty due to lack of maintenance. Spray some carb clean in them and it helps a lot, do not use wires etc to clean the jets.

The rods connecting the two carbs to synchronize them and the electrical connections on the choke are the biggest issues, Otherwise they seem reliable.

Just read and understand the linkage system before you start changing things. And make sure your linkages are not worn. New rod are available throguh the Classic Center in Irvine.

zenith

The rebuild kits now run about 30.00, that's not bad. I'll just soak them, tear 'em down and start over. Thanks all.

Zeniths in fintails

the zeniths are very fine carbs . Very dependable and trouble free when the initial set up is done correctly as per manual. Occasionally they may develop a erratic idle or stall condition when the idle tube gets clogged due to dirt,This is very easily rectified without removing any component. Simply squirt carb cleaner in the idle air bore,a very small hole on the right side of the choke flap bore and all is clear again.

The fuel needle valves used in Zeniths are marked as Solex ,these are identical to the ones used in all the period VW beatles.

I have had many dual carbs I have had at least 15 220 fintyps and a couple 70 cars and have had 4-5 single card 4 on the 280 {110 engine} It was had a holly from jam eng.I rebuilt it and it worked greet. but I think the solex where the best, you can change jets fast, the air intakes can be changed, for more air flow, you can almost rebuild on car [holly bought them out] The best was to adj carbs is with a sinkro tool., You can use air to sinkro them to Air to vack line and make them sound the same, but that is just a fast way , but go buy a sinkro tool for those Zenith you will need it.about every 2 months.
