different rear axle compensating spring: which one to use?
Hi all,
I am currently swapping the rear axle on my '62 W111 Coupe. As I'm there, I have the choice between three different compensating springs that all have the same lenghth and number of coils but: The one out of the car has a 14mm wire section and 92mm outer diameter; the second one has a 14mm wire section and and 94.5 outer diameter; the third one has a 14.5mm wire section and a 94.5 outer diameter. I am using rubber shims on each side, the thinest available. With the original one the car was sitting at a proper height while empty with 0 degree camber as it should, but had a tendency to sag exagerately when I was putting some weight in the trunk. I would like the car to stand the same while empty but not to sag as much while loaded. I'm wondering which of the two other ones I should be using, as I'm fearing to get a negative camber while empty. Anybody has some expeience on this? Thanks in advance! |

Possibly relevant: when I converted my 108 from the (dead) hydropneumatic compensator to the spring setup, the conversion kit included the heavier spring. The car sat higher and showed positive camber, and the ride was very unforgiving. I ended up buying the weaker spring from the dealer and now the car sits correctly and behaves better over bumps.
YMMV.
