Rear wheel bearing play

I was rotating the tires and greasing the suspension on my fintail the other day and noticed the rear wheels had some play in the bearings. One was a bit more than the other, so I have a feeling this is not normal. I looked in the star service manual I got on CD and did not see any specs, but just removal and replacement instructions. Is it safe to assume they're shot, or is there any life left in them?

Thanks
Erik

Sorry, I should of specified. When I grab the wheel and 12 and 6 o'clock and rock it up and down the wheel moves a bit. I believe this would be the axial movement.

Hi,it's time to do them before oil leaks out into the drums . You shouldn't be able to feel any movement at all .
heres a link to a site ( in German) showing how it's done.

I test this with a small bottle jack under the rear trailing arm, raise the tire 1/2" off the floor and run the car through the gears, be careful use two people one to run it one to observe.

It may be the slip joint inside by the differential gears.
try 3 and 9 o'clock play
what type of noise is heard?
