i was talking with another benz mechanic last week and he told me of a car he knew that hadn't been seen for years...

he's bought it and is going to get it running . There were two other 600's in the same barn.

She runs!! she sounded great I was impressed after only a minute of running she was ideling on her own.....that is until I noticed the temp gauge rising to the top...thank goodness I shut her down when I did...looks like the water pump is not working at all. She was at the 250 mark when I killed it...i was so busy watching the engine to make sure there were no fires I didn't notice the gauge :0

sweet!, brings tears to my eyes, another sleeping beauty brought to life.
I would pull the t-stat to make sure it is not corroded closed or the entry exits corroded closed, lets hope it is just the water pump - easy fix, bolts can be a troublesome, just spray them good with lock ease, tap them, soak again , use a good wrench , stip em and your toast, dont ask me how i know

thx guys I hosed them down with PB blaster earlier, already got a couple of them free....the top bolt is already giving me trouble.... I'm definately going to check/replace the thermostat while I'm at it, though I'm positive the water pump is gone. I could here it ratteling around in there and the weep hole was weeping....tears of joy I believe they were. I almost cried with her after all the work I've put into her the last couple of days, though all worth it....still on cloud nine after hearing her pur and the site of seeing the gauges coming to life after so many years.

Still amazed all the electronics are working....power windows, wipers, all lights, brake lights, turn signals, emergency flashers, blower motor and all 3 interior lights!

Today was a good day

The water pump mount is just bolted to thew block so if it is eaten through in places, you can get better 2nd hand or new ones easily enough.
Mercedes Wiring is amazing stuff (pre 1992,after that all bets are off ) and it's generally the things on the end of the wiring that stops working like starters and alternators.

Take your time on the t stat bolts, wiggling them back and forth after good soaking. I have gotten out bolts that were half eaten away this way.

As for the quality of the wiring etc...there is no substitute for doing it right in the first place!

Thx guys, UPDATE: I've replaced the water pump and free'd the thermostat. I took her for a driver down my street yesterday....can't believe how great she was running! The brakes were almost non existent tho : ) Had to use the hand brake which worked great! I noticed this thing sucked my 6 gallon tank half dry in no time. I was trying to figure out how it could be burning so much fuel but i think the return line is sending it back to the tank. I guess that will help if anything. I think i'm going to remove the tank next week and take it up to the radiator shop as someone here suggested. She is idling a little high but I think it may have something to do with the brake vacuum. The booster seems to be working but my guess is that the lines are all clogged and calipers aren't all working? Any thoughts?

Yikes! How much "property tax" did he have to pay on that? I'd say he's got about a 1/3 acre's worth of top soil there!
