M110 Exhaust

The exhaust was shot in my 1980 280SE when I bought it so I had a local muffler shop fabricate a replacement. It was way too "burbly" and would resonate in a narrow rpm band. A few months ago I started collecting parts to convert to a true dual exhaust and finally started this weekend.

Here is a video of the exhaust the local shop made for me:

I'm waiting on a set of manifold gaskets to arrive and then I'll put it together and see how it sounds.

The newer m110 manifolds will give you the dual exhaust you want, but the pipes feed into a single resonator and single muffler and exit as two pipes. This eliminates the need for an equalizer pipe between the two pipes. If you're thinking of making it completely separate dual exhaust, it won't be close to original and it will make a hell of a racket without fabricating an equalizer pipe.

I agree with you; your current system sounds a bit loud and funky - kind of like the little front-wheel-drive cars with fart-cans that all the stupid teenagers drive around Cincinnati.

Are you missing a middle box? If so then this is why it sounds the way it does.

I agree with Al,it should have the resonators in the middle of the car. Normally you have one under the rear seat area fed from the dual pipes from the engine which lead to the rear muffler. Those manifolds will wake your engine up though. That US only shocker is pretty awful.

It's missing the middle muffler and it has some pretty constrictive bends. I'm putting on a Mercedes exhaust with the correct crossover - I should be able to fire it up this week.

Bolted it all back together tonight and I can say is wow. I should have done this to begin with. I haven't driven it yet but it sounds much better at idle.

Here is how she sounds now - I think it is much more refined than before and sounds less burbly and more Mercedes like. MercMad was right - the euro manifolds are a major improvement over the 6-into-1 the car came with. The car is much peppier from a stand still than it was before.

Sounds good. So you only have a muffler on the system?

I put on a standard Mercedes exhaust with center and rear mufflers. Two 3-into-1 manifolds, dual pipes all the way to the rear.

Where did you purchase the center muffler? I need one for my 280CE.

I had my exhaust replaced not to long ago, kept the stock MB muffler, new pipes, and they put the glasspacks(resonators) on it and they sound awful. I want to put the correct center piece back in to get that Mercedes sound back. Thanks

I watched eBay for about 6 months before they popped up. Another alternative is to contact the Classic Center, but both mufflers cost about $1k for my car. Maybe you will have better luck.

Have you checked out TimeValve?

I wish my 280S sounded like that. Silly 4A1 Solex.
