Front fender sealant
Hi all,
I have removed the front fenders on my W111 Coupe in an effort to rustproof the chassis. I found some surface rust, but nothing requiring repair. I'm now going to clean, brush etc and then paint with Por-15. There was some sealant in between the outer fenders and the inner fenders as well as on the A pillar. What kind of sealant should I use? I read some people use some PU sealant. Is that good? The problem is that this is my only car and I can't drive it to an automotive store now. I'd rather use something I can find in the ACE hardware store next to my house. Any help on what product I should get would be great. Thanks! |

I'm in the process of doing the same on my W123. After applying POR15 I was planning to seal the joint with clear bathroom silicone sealant because I don't want to have the hassle of getting the real stuff off again!

No, NO, NO, NO! Do NOT use silicone! The acetic acid produced during the curing process will actually promote rust!
If you don't want to use the "proper" seam sealer then at least use Butyl rubber or thin closed cell weather stripping. |

Also silicone is not good the day when you want to paint your car.
I was thinking some liquid rubber used to seal roofs etc. I will go the ACE tomorrow and see what they have. |

I've been to the hardware store and they have some products that may do the job:
The first one is called "Blacktop Driveway" and is a crack filling compound. It contains Asphalt, Mineral spirits, Cellulose and Inorganic fillers. The second one is a roof asphalt sealant and it contains Asphalt, Clay, Stoddard, Solvent, Talk and Mineral spirits. As a reference, they also had cans of rubberized undercoating containing water, asphalt, calcium carbonate, propane, butane, mineral spirits and methanol. I'm no chemist so if someone in conversant with all these products please advise on the best of the two first ones, as the can may not be the easiest to use for my need. Thanks! |

The original stuff is grey non setting mastic . You can buy it an any good car paint supplier. Don't be tempted to use Sika flex 252 etc because it glues the panel tight to the car and you will never get it off again.W123's often have the front fenders stuck on with it from new and getting a damaged front fender off is nearly impossible.

Er OK - thanks for the NO NO NO silicone tips - the stuff I was thinking of probably has no silicone in it anyway - I get the feeling that the Dutch word for silicone is used as a generic term for that sort of sealant anyway...
...I might investigate roofing alternatives instead of the bathroom options... (Sorry to slightly thread jack)
