Hi,
use ATF for power steering and engine oil for the injection pump.

The 6.3 uses an air suspension, not a fluid hydraulic system like the 6.9's.

David

I think that the fuel injection pump can use regular motor oil. But it's best to go to http://www.m-100.cc and ask on that forum. This is where most of the 6.3 owners live.

There is a reservoir under the hood for the air suspension. It seems to me that it was near the front left under the hood but it has been a long time. You should keep it filled with denatured alcohol. I believe its purpose was to help the balloons keep from leaking. At the bottom of the reservoir is a relief valve. When you push it to the side it expels a white, viscous spatter.

I think it might be some sort of alcohol product, in which case it's there to keep moisture out of the system.

David

Yeah, that's right. Same idea that big trucks use for air brakes - it helps to keep moisture out of the system. I use methel hydrate.
If the system holds air properly, and by this I mean for months at a time, then very little new air ever enters the system so it will stay fairly moisture free.
The purge valve on the bottom of the air storage tank should be opened once in a while. The milky fluid is a mixture of water and engine oil that gets by the rings in the air compressor pump.

The IP on these cars have a dip stick on the back of the pump to check oil level. They're often over filled. Use a suction gun to draw off all of the oil and then refill to the upper mark on thedip stick. This system is similar to a 230SL in that it doesn't circulate though the engine and the IP has its own crank case level.

One other thing that few people are aware of is the engine block has a drainage hole at the back of the valley between the two cylinder banks. This hole should be cleaned and kept clean. All V8 engines have this same drainage hole. You will also find drainage holes on M110 engines right at the spark plugs.

You could have had my 70 6.3, it is for sale....

The reservoir holds denatured alcohol, prevents freezing in the air lines.

ATF goes in the PS pump, if you get moaning noises, you need to bleed the steering box. Engine oil in the MFI pump.

The MFI runs like hell on ethanol gas.

Keep up the pics. I had mine repainted in about '79 or '80; the clear coat on the hood, roof, and trunk had gone bad. Spent $3K which was a lot in those days for a (as I remember) about 15 coat lacquer job and it was beautiful. Looking up close the paint job looked like a mirror, no orange peel or other defect. If you look at the new machine-painted cars today, there is no comparison in the quality of the paint job; they all have orange peel. However I am told that the durability of the new paint is better than in 1970.

What color and what kind of paint job are you getting? Was there any rust?

Hi,you`r right abot today car quality of paint, remember also that new generation do not know how things where built before, therefore for them the today quality is just fine....
regarding the 6.3 yes it is a rust free south western car,i`m gonna repainted her in her original silber grau code 180 no more black roof....already send the wood out to be refinish, today the seats would be removed as well, while the engine mount and shoks are being replaced.
i believe it would take a couple of months to have it ready, meanwhile i will post some more pics of the car.

best

Marino
