1963 230sl opinions

I am seriously thinking of buying one for $6000. Runs fine (so he says).

I've never owned a gas MB before.

Is there anything that this car is particularly problem prone? Is maintenance and repair doable without the dealer? As a diy, I am capable of replacing a clutch, head gasket, etc.

Talk me into it or talk me out of it. Pleez!

This would be a very early car, and they have a following among the 113 crowd. They are very simple cars with the exception of the mechanical injection pump which either works and you leave it alone or you send it off to be rebuilt and leave it alone. Underneath, they are basically a W110, only shorter.

Rust and neglect are the main enemies. The 113-specific pieces like chrome and interior fittings are very expensive so be sure it's complete. The early soft tops have problems that can be expensive to fix.

Unless the seller is totally ignorant of the value of these cars, this can't be a very good one. Parts and project cars sell for more than this.

There is a huge amount of information on the Pagoda web site.

this is the moment where temptation and greed meet!

you are saying it is undervalued at $6000 so my greed is telling me to jump on it.

the practical side is saying to me....dude you know nothing about gasser MBs....run

I will have to see this for myself. I will keep you posted.

I don't know...
I had a car listed for 45,000.00 A pretty nice 1970 280SL. The guy died a while back and I figured it was a lost cause because his wife was handling the estate.
Then I found out later through a friend that he bought it for a song - I mean REALLY cheap.

Someone who looked at it last spring when her husband was still alive ended up bying the car recently for a parts car price, or so the former owner's wife told me. I exlained to her that it was still my sale and so she agreed to give me something.

I told her I would have bought the car myself had I known.
She said, '' You didn't make me an offer. ''
She wanted 45K, why would I?
Talk about adding insult to injury.......

So, there are deals of the century ( it's early yet ) still out there. 6K is believable......

BTW, I'm not a used car sales man. Just a guy that finds cars people want to move and new owners for them. And, not very often.........

Chuck, I like that description. Also, underneath the 107's are basically a 114/115 only shorter.

And a good thing, too.

That's where I sourced my replacement front subframe for my 84 280SL, a 1970 w114 250....
