How does this engine sound?

Hello Peaches,

You may have read about the motor swap in the Emerald Bullet. The original motor blew a rod. The car now has a 2.8 liter engine with Solex carbs from the original engine. The engine had worn rocker arms and pivot ball tower assemblies which made the valve train sound kind of loud. Here is a link to the motor before:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwYp-Pyroig

This is a video of the motor after changing the rockers and ball stud assemblies.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auDlFZZlAKo&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL

Finally, this is a video of me driving the car for a mile.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qTlf1RMRVQ&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL

All of the videos are filmed in 1080P high-definition.

What do you think? How does the engine sound? It seems quieter to me and smoother.

I think it sounds a little smoother, I'm not sure if quieter though. Nice videos

Cool stuff, car looks/sounds like it drives great
Is that a tach in the middle of the dash?
If so, I really like it, what did you use?

It's great to see that you didn't give up on the car. In the first video the engine sounds like the one in my 300SD!

My roommate has a 1965 220S (among other cars), which is in almost daily driver condition and I've borrowed it to go to work a few times. His has an automatic transmission.

Sounds much better but it also sounds like you need to grease your drivers door hinges

Something like this should work if you don't have the proper fitting for your grease gun.

Yes, that is a tach. I bought it at O'Reilly for $30.00.

I was hoping that someone with an healthy M130 engine would comment. I don't have another motor to compare this one to. It sounds good to me... Thanks for the comments.

By the way... There is some stuff about the setup that is different than stock which might also make it sound slightly different. Instead of the Zenith carburetors, I am using the Solex PAITA dual carbs and manifold from the M180 Engine. I also have the M180 cam which I believe is a milder unit. It has a Holley electric fuel pump and pressure regulator set at 4.5psi. The motor is setup with the M180 oil filter, not the M130 unit that has plumbing for an oil cooler, so I used a 6 blade fan to get more airflow across the radiator. There is a new thermostat and water pump on the engine and it runs no hotter than 180-degrees ever. It has a capacitive discharge unit connected to the distributor for a little extra zap.

I grease that door regularly with the correct fitting. The driver's door was replaced after an accident and the fit might be different? Believe it or not, it is actually sounding much better now with a slight squeek compared to the groaning "cemetary crypt" sound it used to make.

I've never seen a column shift before, Very nice. First vid sounded like a diesel, Impressive for a gasser motor, the new parts sure make that engine sound nice,

My car has a M130 motor, and think yours is sounding good, much improved over the initial clip.
